Hearn Wins 358 Opener at Merrittville

Brett Hearn set fast time in time trials, won his heat, drew the pole, and led every lap of the feature to dominate the 100 lap Merrittville Speedway opener, pocketing Hearn $4,000. Jimmy Phelps gave it everything he had though, and almost made a pass on Hearn on the last lap. Phelps, who lost by 1/2 a car length, finished second, and rounding out the top 5 was Danny Johnson, Pete Bicknell, and Stewart Friesen.

A couple of guys were in different cars then normal at Merrittville. Jimmy Phelps was driving the Scott Kerwin owned #7, Gary Tomkins returned to a Chad Brachmann owned car as he was piloting Brachmann's back up, and Stewart Friesen was driving the Kendrick Racing #6* as a teammate to Danny O'Brien.

BDR...My Power Rankings

Sittin' here at home today with a bit of a busted up foot, so I thought I'd do a little somethin' for the Wago blog....This year I really want to stop in here more often and help my boy Jman out with something for his blog, just to give the readers different stuff to read and different things to check out from time to time.

Since my home track is Big Diamond Raceway, and the world knows that, most (but not all, lol)of my entries will be BDR "stuff"....And with the season well underway now, I thought I'd do a little Power Rankings from the track in "God's Country", so here ya go....

SBM
1.Craig Von Dohren (Right now week in and week out that #1C is the fastest car out there, Strunky stole one from him last week)

2.Duane Howard ("The Diamond Cutter" might have had the top spot, but that new #4 Troyer I'll call the "White Ghost", cuz ya barely seen/knew it was out there Fri, he ran last week, isn't close yet to what that "Black Beauty" #4 he's been running up there is when it comes to speed, NOT YET)

3.Doug Manmiller ("The Handler" just keeps doing what he's does, FINISH races. He's the point leader, but needs to get a win to move up in my rankings, and that will probably comes soon, until then I guess, lol)

4.Jeff Strunk ("The X-Factor" has 2 wins now at BDR. He's struggled with some really bad luck early on, the #41 has shown it's fast, and with that performance last Fri night beating CVD and having the place on their feet, he really moved up my rankings after that race.)

5.Billy Pauch Jr ("Sir William" has been doing it "BIG WILLIE STYLE" lately, and IMO thats what Power Rankings are all about. Last 3 races two 3rds and a 5th, before that, strugglin' a bit. Jr has it goin' good right now)

6.John Willman ("The Ultimate Underdog" has been SUPER SUPER SOLID at BDR this year. If not for two mechanical failures, he'd have a top 10 in EVERY RACE, and right now I believe he sits in the 4th spot in the points. A win is coming soon)

7.Rick Laubach ("Scooby" as he's known in these parts, has really struggled the first part of the year in his new ride, the Rea R1. But the last 3 weeks or so, Laubach has really come on and has found himslef in the top 5 most nights. This combo is only getting better)

8.Meme Desantis ("The Temple Tornado" has really had a roller coaster year so far. But he does have a solid win already, and when he finishes, it's in the top 10. Needs the consitency factor)

9.David Van Horn (Here's a guy who was another that when the checkered flag fell, he was bringing it home in a top 10 spot every week. Last Fri night really hurt, as he qualified in 2nd spot in the heat, but a motor issue made him scratch for the night, which dropped him in the points from 4th to around the 7th position. Look for this team to rebound for sure.)

10.Kevin Albert ("Kamikaze" as he's known these days, is BY FAR, the most improved racer at the track this year in the SBM divisons. A couple of 10th's, and now a couple of 6th's place finishes, and that #3A really going good, look for Albert to pick a win off this year before it's all said and done.)

Honorable Mentions

Ryan Godown (Early on was maybe the fastest cars out there, last 3 weeks it's been a DISASTER for this team, but they will rebound and be moving up my rankings FOR SURE. Like I said, it's a "what have ya done for me lately" rankings.)

Gary Hager (Here's a guy who's been solid, sittin' in the top 10 in points all year, just needs that breakout night, and it will happen)

Ray Swinehart ("Suga" has been fast at BDR all year long, but it just seems lately he's running up front, but can't finish. That will change, and Ray will be in VL soon, you can count on that, his night is coming.)

Congratulations to Mike Mahaney on his first career modified win. Lots of drivers were in different cars this week, Bobby Varin blew up the Romano Racing 97 modified Friday and Glen Ridge, so Erik Nelson offered up his #85, which Varin ended up winning the night's feature with. Kevin Bolland is still serving his questionable suspension with the BRP Modified Tour for not using the guarenteed starting spot in last year's Rite-Aid 200, so, for the BRP Tour race at Lernerville Speedway Bolland hired sprint car star Ed Lynch to pilot the car, he brough home a 6th place finish. David Van Horn drove Brian Truppi's #02 to a 5th place finish at New Egypt Speedway after Van Horn discovered problems on his car. Ryan Jacobs is returning to full-time competition after taking a few years off.

Weekend Racing Schedule

We've got another big weekend of racing scheduled for this weekend, hopefully the weather cooperates and we can all enjoy some great racing action!

Friday night will see the BRP Modified Tour kick off its season at Lernerville Speedway, other than that it's a typical Friday night, as Ransomville, Brewerton, Accord, Glen Ridge, Albany-Saratoga, Penn Can, Cam Am, I-88, Mohawk, Big Diamond, Granby, and Edelweiss all have regular shows scheduled for the modified division.

Saturday night will see the modified division partake in the Dan Tag Memorial which pays $3,000 to win at Lebanon Valley Speedway. Canandaigua Speedway will see twin features for the big block modifieds, last week's curfewed feature has been added to the program, Orange County Fair Speedway will also run two modified features, as they'll run the May 8th curfewed event. Five Mile Point Speedway and Merrittville Speedway both are giving the modifieds off this weekend. Fonda, Fulton, Delaware, New Egypt, Bridgeport, Grandview, Mercer, Sharon, Mahoning Valley, Brockville-Ontario, Grandview, Drummond, and Airborne will all have regular shows scheduled for the modified division.

Sunday will start the Canadian National Series at Cornwall Speedway with a 100-lap $3,000 to win feature for the small block modifieds. Humberstone Speedway has an off week for the modifieds. Cayuga County Fair Speedway, Tri City Speedway, and Utica Rome Speedway will all run regular schedules.

Monday will kick off the 358 Dirt Series after a couple of rainouts has delayed their season to this point. The tour will invade Merrittville Speedway for a 100 lap, $4,000 to win feature event.

Be sure to go out and support some race track this weekend!

Big Diamond's Pack The House Night 5/21

This coming Friday night is one of the fan favorites of the year at the BDR...Not really because there is going to be any so called "special" race happening on the track this Friday night...NO NO NO, instead it'll be the annual "Pack The House Night" being sponsored once again by local radio station T-102 and local contracting company The House Doctors....You'll get the regular 3 division show BDR has weekly, SBM's, SPTS's and the ever popular Road Runners, but get this, it's only going to cost an adult $8 to walk through the gates, EIGHT BUCKS, now that's a DEAL.

Honestly folks, not many tracks do these types of things these days, keep the normal show, but lower the admission price to see it, that really is a SWEET deal IMO....And the fans always respond to this gesture by actually coming out and packing the place for this bargain night....It just really is an AWESOME atmosphere for this event.

As always, the weather and 'Ma Nature' can play a HUGE roll in the success of any racing event....But early indications are, from all of the different forecasts I've seen so far, it IS going to be a BEAUTIFUL Friday afternoon, evening, and race night, with sunshine, and temperatures around 80 degrees, YEP, couldn't ask for anything better.

So if you want to see some AWESOME local dirt track racing, at a SUPER bargain price, you'll want to get out and be at the Big Diamond Raceway this Friday night....I know I'l be there, hope you are too.

Not So Breaking News

Well, sitting here working third shift this weekend. Let me tell you, I don't know how you third shifters pull this off, I'm beat and I've still got 2 and a half hours to go!

Anyway, I deleted some old driver links, and added some news ones.

Also, in case any of you missed it in the chat box, Chad Sinon and Doug Hoffman will not be running together this year. Sinon and Hoffman announced in the off-season that Hoffman would be in the BPG Racing 60over modified for special shows, but plans have fallen through. Hoffman will still run a modified at New Jersey Motorsports Park for the June 20th 50-mile race out of the Sal DeBruno Racing stable.

Troy Wink has parted ways with HP Motorsports on friendly terms. Most of the equipment that the HP team was running was actually Wink's equipment, so I don't expect them to field a car. Rumor has is that Wink may only run once a week, but almost might not run weekly at all, and instead just field a car for another driver. Corey Sechrist drove for Wink at Big Diamond Raceway on Friday night.

Area Auto Racing News broke the story that Ted Christopher will be teaming with with the Bartemy Race Team in a dirt modified for the New Jersey Motorsports Park race. Christopher tested one of Sal DeBruno's cars at the track during an open practice session a few weeks ago. Bartemy, who fields cars for family members Adam and Aaron at Airborne Speedway, will have three cars entered in the race, two for his sons, and one for Christopher. Speaking of the New Jersey Motorsports race, from collecting news from many sources, here are some of the cars we know are entered, there are still at least 10 more, as the field has received 35 entries to this point...

0 Richie Pratt
0H Doug Hoffman
0NW Neil Williams
01 Brett Ballard
1 Billy Pauch
2w Wade Hendrickson
3 Adam Bartemy
B3 Aaron Bartemy
7A Chic Cossaboone
8c Jeff Marcucci
11 Scott Armbruster
x15 Billy Briggs
20 Rick Laubach
21m Mike Lyons
31 Tommy Beamer
35 Matt Marrell
44 Jimmy Chester
47 Bob Sarkisian
47 John Dixon
71 David Van Horn
76 Brett Graham
99H Jesse Hill
711 Mike Iles
? Ted Christopher

Also, looking back, I realized that I never posted that Dave Werber has teamed up with Jeremy Markle to drive for Markle at Orange County Fair Speedway. Markle is also helping out rookie Billy VanInwegen. Look for Werber to break out his own equipment later in the season.

Missed Another Big Show

Well, what can I say, I blew it with another show that should've been in the Club Wago Crown Jewel Fantasy League. I didn't realize that the Alex Friesen Summer Nationals were going to pay $10,000 to win this year at Ransomville Speedway for the small block modifieds. The race will be run on August 6th. Ransomville, who dropped Dirt sanctioning this year, is doing a great job with big money shows. Another highlight on their 2010 schedule is the July 2nd big block modified 75 lap race that'll pay $5,000 to win. Special thanks goes out to "Person" in the chat box for pointing out that the Summer Nationals purse has been raised.

It's great to see so many high-paying shows for the big block modifieds this year, here are the show's that'll pay at least $10,000 to win in the big and small block divisions this year...

Donnie Elliott To Run for Oscar Boria Racing

Donnie Elliott returned to racing this year in his popular #49 modified for competition at Accord Speedway, and he has now also landed a ride for Orange County Fair Speedway big block competition. Elliott will drive the Oscar Boria owned #OB's big block modified, which hasn't seen the track this year, in weekly competition at Orange County, the duo will debut on the hard clay in a few weeks. Boria, a former driver, has fielded cars for many drivers, and found the most success with Ric Hill behind the wheel of his car.
