Hagerstown "Fall Brawl" Update

With Hagerstown Speedway's struggles in 2011, and with the Octoberfest weekend being rebranded as the "Fall Brawl," a lot of race fans believed there would be a significant purse reduction in the end-of-year special in 2012.

However, the track has stated via e-mail that the race will pay $10,000 for the big-blocks, sprints, and late models as long as 35 cars enter the event per division. If a division has less than 35 cars enter, the race will pay $5,000 to win. The small block modifieds have been replaced by the 358 sprints for the weekend, which will run for a smaller purse.

Lernerville Schedule Updated, Minor Volusia Update; DIRTcar

First of all, in news that everyone already knows, Kenny Tremont has announced he'll return to run weekly at Albany this year. He'll also continue to run weekly at Lebanon Valley and Utica Rome and will follow the DIRTcar Asphalt schedule and run Super DIRT Week.

Darwin Greene is the latest to confirm he'll be at Volusia per his interview on Doug's Dirt Diary.

The Lernerville Speedway 2012 schedule has been released and is available on their website. The master schedule has been updated as well.

Missing from Lernerville's schedule is a Super DIRTcar Series race. Early in the off-season it appeared a lock that Lernerville would see the Super DIRTcar Series return to the Western PA oval this year, however, DIRTcar has confirmed that Lernerville and recently announced DIRTcar-sanctioned Sharon Speedway will not be on the 2012 Super DIRTcar Series schedule. Look for both tracks to be on the Series schedule in 2013.

Look for the Super DIRTcar Series schedule to be released right before the DIRTcar Nationals. Expect a similar schedule to 2011, with the addition of Albany-Saratoga Speedway and potentially a track that will host modifieds for the first time, in a state that has never hosted a Super DIRTcar Series race.

Volusia Entry List Update

Ton of Schedule Updates; Other News

Big Diamond and Can Am have both announced purse increases for 2012. Big Diamond will pay $2,750 to win weekly and Can Am will pay $1,500 to win weekly in 2012.

Bridgeport Speedway has announced the Poker Series this year. It will be run just the Poker Series Doug Hoffman put together the last couple years at Mahoning Valley Speedway. Each race will pay at least $4,000 to win and the overall best hand at the end of the 5 race deal will pocket an extra $2,500.

I'll have a more in depth update on things tomorrow.

Track News

I-88 Speedway has announced they'll be part of the RoC Dirt Tour in 2012 this June. The race will most likely be part of the Northern Tour. Also, the Wade Decker Memorial will be held in July and will pay $5,000 to win.

Sharon Speedway has announced the big-blocks will be DIRTcar Sanctioned in 2012. With Lernerville Speedway likely returning to the Super DIRTcar Series in 2012, look for Sharon to also potentially host a race.

Merrittville Speedway Schedule Released

Stankiewicz and Meitzler Split

Former Grandview Speedway Rookie of the Year, Addison Meitzler, has parted ways with Rich Stankiewicz Racing. Meitzler has purchased the team's Teo and will run weekly at Grandview Speedway with his own #21 small block modified.

No word on what Stankiewicz will do in 2012, but it appears as if the team may sit out.

Siri, Volusia, McGinnis, Graham and Accord Tidbits

Tyler Siri is the latest driver to confirm he'll be making the jump up to the big-block modified division in 2012. Siri will run weekly at Canandaigua this season with his #5 car. The youngster will be kicking his season off at Volusia in a few weeks, but will have veteran Steve Paine the car the first 2-nights, and Siri will run the final 2-nights of the DIRTcar Nationals.

Jeff McGinnis has landed a ride driving for Jerry Skurski Racing in 2012. McGinnis, one of the more underrated modified stars, will run for the team weekly at Ranomsville Speedway. As previously noted, Skurski's 2011 driver, Ryan Susice, will be driving his family-funded team in 2012 at Ransomville and the RoC Northern Tour.

Look for Brett Graham to return full-time in the modified ranks this season. The team is currently looking at running Accord weekly and Orange County part-time with select traveling mixed in.

Accord Speedway has announced that this year they not have sail panels on the modifieds. Accord has been running sail panels on their headline division since the mid-2000s.

Second RoC Race Added to Selinsgrove

Selinsgrove Speedway will have a 2nd RoC Dirt Tour modified event this season. Joining their popular RoC Ice Breaker Weekend will be a summer RoC date, scheduled for Tuesday June 19th. There will be a RoC race on Wednesday, June 20th at another PA track as well, announcement will be coming soon.

This may be what is run instead of PA Speed Week in 2012, but there's still no official word on what's going on with PA Modified Speedweek.

Fuller and Berger to Volusia; Kunkle Moving Up

Wight to Volusia, Decker Running Late Model

Larry Wight will be taking his big-block to Volusia this year after last year the Gypsum Racing team only attended the DIRTcar Nationals with Wight's #99L late model. This year, Billy Decker will focus on running the late model, while Wight will run the big-blocks.

Wright Moving Up; Bridgeport Back; Other Tidbits

Another top sportsman star will be making the move up to the modified division in 2012. Justin Wright, a DIRTcar Sportsman Series star and weekly runner at Ransomville and Canandaigua will be making the move up to run both big blocks and small blocks in 2012.

Wright will run in the small block division weekly at Ransomville Speedway on Friday nights driving the Sweeting Enterprises Racing #11J that he ran in a bunch of sportsman races last season. Wright also made his 358-modified debut with the team during Super DIRT Week at Weedsport Speedway and Rolling Wheels Raceway and impressed many.

For the big-block ranks, Wright will pilot his family-owned #19w weekly at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. Wright will also do select traveling with both the big and small blocks.

Bridgeport Speedway will bring the big-blocks back in 2012 under the leadership of Doug Hoffman. Check out this week's edition of Area Auto Racing News for more info.

Ryan Susice plans on following the RoC Northern Tour this season, and will also run the combo events. He will kick his season off at Selinsgrove in March, running at least the Friday portion of the weekend. Susice will once again run weekly at Ransomville Speedway in 2012.

In case you missed it in the chat box, Jon Kellner Jr will focus on running Grandview weekly again in 2012. Jon's father, Jon Kellner Sr, is still searching for a ride.

Albany DIRTcar Sanctioned

Its been speculated all off-season, but Albany-Saratoga is officially DIRTcar sanctioned for 2012. DIRTcar officials made the announcement at the EMPA Convention.

Look for Albany-Saratoga Speedway to host the Super DIRTcar Series this season after a long hiatus from the schedule. The track has also announced it will open with a big 2-day weekend April 19-20, with modifieds features both days.

Lincoln RoC Dirt Tour Update

Just got confirmation from Bob Miller that the RoC Dirt Tour event for Lincoln Speedway is still on, but the sides are agreeing on a suitable date. On Lincoln's originally released schedule, the event was listed for Tuesday, July 17th.

Look for this race to be a part of PA Modified Speed Week.

Grandview Speedway Releases Schedule; Forrest Rogers Update

Grandview Speedway has released their schedule for the 2012 season, which will be their 50th consecutive season of racing.

I've also added the schedule to the 2012 Big Block/Small Block schedule (link on the left).

Last week I posted that the Forrest Rogers Memorial could pay $20,000 to win to certain drivers this year. Area Auto Racing News got the inside scoop and released that any weekly runner at Grandview will be eligible to win $20,000 at the Forrest Rogers Memorial, if an invader wins that race, they'll get the usual $10,000 for the win.

Johnson with Biever for Volusia

Alan Johnson will be partnering with Dick Biever Racing for an assault on Volusia for the DIRTcar Nationals coming up in February. Special thanks to our friend TWK for breaking the news to us via the chatbox on the right.

Biever, who parted ways with Jimmy Horton earlier this off-season, will be partnering with Johnson's regular ride in 2012, the Kenny Saya Motorsports team for the assault on Volusia.

Biever is still looking at running other select specials this season with a driver to be announced.

Mike Petruska Racing names Pauch Jr 2012 Driver

Billy Pauch Jr will have the best ride of his young career in 2012. Pauch Jr has been named the full-time drive of the Mike Petruska Racing #66 modified for weekly competition at New Egypt Speedway. Pauch Jr and the team will also be running select Friday nights at Accord Speedway, meaning that Pauch Jr will not be returning to the Fitzpatrick Racing T102 in 2012 (Doug Manmiller will return to that team to be the team's lone modified driver at Big Diamond.)

Pauch Jr will hit the road for select specials with the 66 team, and will also have his own #15 car for select events as well. Pauch Jr will continue to run select ARDC and 358 sprint car races.

Godown to Rick Clay Racing

Ryan Godown's busy off-season continues. First, the team he drove for in 2011, JR Motorsports, sold out, he was soon gobbled up by 747 Motorsports to race weekly at New Egypt Speedway. Now, Godown has landed another solid ride for specials in 2012.

Ryan Godown has taken over driving duties of the Rick Clay Racing #88c for 2012. Godown and the team will run specials in Pennsylvania and New Jersey next season. Godown will also have his own #26 for running in other select RoC shows, and even hopes to make select Sunday nights appearances at Utica Rome Speedway.

Clay's driver over the past few seasons, Billy Pauch Jr, has an exciting year planned ahead of him. Check out the blog tomorrow for news on the talented chauffeur.

In other Godown news, Troy and Donna Wink have sold the #27 that Godown drove to victory at Lincoln Speedway in 2011 and will not be fielding a car in 2012.

Minor Tidbits

Lincoln Speedway has announced that the RoC Dirt Tour will return to the popular clay oval in 2012 on July 17th (thanks Nick). According to early reports, Lincoln's RoC date would be part of the PA Modified Speed Week schedule. I haven't heard any updates on that recently, so we'll see what happens.

Orange County will be announcing their new handicapping system soon. Look for heat races to be handicapped, resulting in heads up feature line ups.

According to AARN.com, this year's Forrest Rogers Memorial winner could potentially win $20,000 this year. From what I've been told, the race will still pay at least $10,000 to the winner, and 1 driver will be eligible for the $20,000 pay day. Check out this week's edition of Area Auto Racing News for official word.

Breitenstein Not Done Yet! Chad Brachmann to Drive #14 in '12

A few weeks ago it looked like Breitenstein Motorsports would not be fielding a car in 2012 after a solid season with Kenny Gilmore behind the wheel of the #14 car at Grandview Speedway, however, recent developments have resulted in the team returning in 2012 in part-time action.

The long-time Pennsylvania team has announced that New York star Chad Brachmann will take over driving duties of the #14 car in part-time action. Brachmann and Breitenstein will enter in select weekly and high-payingshows at Grandview, including the Forrest Rogers Memorial and Freedom 76er, along with higher paying events at tracks including Big Diamond, Penn Can, Five Mile Point, among others.

Brachmann will continue to run his own equipment weekly at Ransomville, and will also run at Merrittville part-time on Saturday nights. On top of that, look for Brachmann to hit up select shows in Western PA along with other big-block events throughout the year.

Can Am Motorsports Park Going Big-Blocks

Can Am Motorsports Park has announced that they will bring the big-block modifieds back to run the the small blocks in 2012, like they did in 2010. Can Am ran small blocks as the headline division in 2011, which forced former track regulars Steve Paine, Lance Willix, Rob Bellinger, Vince Vitale, and Tim Kerr all to not return to Can Am in 2012. Billy Dunn had also previously announced he would not return to Can Am in 2012. No word on any of those drivers plans, yet.

Can Am has already previously announced a move to Saturday nights in 2012, along with a the purse being increased to $1,500 to win.

This is the track that I hinted was returning to DIRTcar big-block sanction earlier in the off-season.

Schedule Updates

First of all, Glen Ridge Motorsports Park has announced that they will not for DIRTcar sanctioned in 2012, while Canandaigua Motorsports Park returns to the DIRTcar fold in 2012 despite rumors suggesting otherwise.

Big Diamond Speedway has released its Friday night schedule, which is available on SouthJerseyDirtRacing.com, and also HagerstownSpeedway.com has released its 2012 schedule. Of note from the Big Diamond schedule, the Coalcracker is being shortened to 72 laps this season, and Hagerstown Speedway's "Octoberfest" has been replaced with the "Fall Brawl." Big blocks/small blocks will run together at the event in 2012, and the race will be a 50-lap feature. No word on purse.

I'll post Big Diamond's schedule to the big block/small block schedule when the Saturday schedule also comes out.

Kolka Heading to Volusia

Mike Kolka, a feature winner in 2011 at Orange County Fair Speedway, is the latest driver to confirm his plans on going to Volusia in February. Kolka confirmed on Dirt Track Digest's message board that he's going to make his first every trip to Volusia to take part in the big-block portion of the DIRTcar Nationals.

Kolka will not be in his usual #25 though, instead, he will pilot the Oscar Boria-owned #OB's car. Since Boria stepped out of the seat in the mid-2000s, he's had many drivers drive his equipment. Scott Flammer and Ric Hill experienced the most success with the equipment. Boria's car stayed parked through most of 2011, but Bobby Varin had a solid run before being involved in an accident in the Eastern States 200 with the car.

Godown To 747

Ryan Godown confirmed via his Facebook that his 2012 weekly New Egypt ride will be aboard the Team 747 Racing Team.

Godown has driven the 747 machine at Super DIRT Week for the past 2 seasons, and ran the car in 1 previous season at New Egypt. Godown became a free agent after JR Motorsports sold out earlier in the season. Godown will also have his own #26 car and the Wink Motorsports #27 to run in specials throughout 2012.

Dick Biever Update

Don't expect to see the popular Dick Biever Racing #14 running anywhere weekly in 2012. Biever is hoping to run a specials-only schedule with a high-profile veteran driver, however, there is a slight chance that Biever may not field a car at all in 2012.

Albany, Meitzler Tidbits

First of all, to the left I've posted a link to the 2012 big/small block modified master schedule. All that's currently listed are the Volusia dates. I know there are a few other tracks that have announced races, but I'm going to wait to post those until the final track schedules come out later this winter.

Albany-Saratoga Speedway is already starting to compile a nice field of drivers, despite not announcing a sanction. Brett Hearn, Ronnie Johnson, and Matt DeLorenzo have already confirmed that they will be weekly competitors at Albany on Friday nights in 2012.

Rich Stankiewicz Racing may be sitting out 2012, which would leave former Grandview Speedway Rookie of the Year Addison Meitzler without a ride. A decision should be made soon.

It was previously reported on here that there were rumors of Team FAST, which fields modifieds for Meme and A.J. DeSantis, selling out. We've received word that the team won't be sitting out and will have the DeSantis father and son combo in the team's equipment in 2012. However, current plans are for 2012 to be the final season for the team. Special thanks to Matt Bauer for the info.

AARN Confirms Asphalt Series

As previously reported on here, there was a new asphalt series taking shape under sanctioning from DIRTcar, Area Auto Racing News confirms those reports. However, it appears as if only two tracks ended up signing up to be part of the series. Dunn Tire Raceway Park and Airborne Speedway will be the two tracks that will be part of the 4-race schedule. Check out this week's AARN for more info.

Horton Officially a Free Agent

It's official, Jimmy Horton and Dick Biever Racing have parted ways. The two sides struggled through mechanical woes and major streaks of bad luck throughout 2011 and were only able to collect 1 win in 2011. Special thanks for Jimmy Horton IV for allowing me to break the story.

Horton, who ran weekly for Dieter Schmidt along with select RoC and Super DIRTcar Series races, also drove in about 10 races in special shows for Dieter Schmidt in 2011, expect him to return to that team on a part-time basis at least. Horton is apparently already working towards 2012.

Dick Biever Racing's famous #14 has had an all-star cast of drivers over the years including Elvin Felty, Terry Meitzler, Rick Laubach, and Doug Manmiller. Look for the team to land another high-profile driver. Ryan Godown and Kenny Brightbill are two big-names that recently lost their rides and could be good fits.

Volusia Update

Per Doug's Dirt Diary, Matt DeLorenzo will be running at Volusia again in 2011, he made his first appearance there in 2010. Ray Swinehart, one of the top PA veterans, will once again go to Volusia as well. Swinehart is an annual participant in the February races.

Can Am Raises Purse

Can Am is raising the winner's purse to $1,500 to win in 2012, which is what it used to pay when the big-blocks were the headline division. Look for Chris Raabe to run weekly at Can Am in 2012.

My Take: RoC vs Super DIRTcar Series

Time for me to start sharing my opinions. First things first, this is my unbiased opinion, I no longer work for DIRTcar (was a 1-year internship-like deal I was in) so my opinions are in no way swayed one direction or the other.

The Super DIRTcar Series had become stagnant. Do they still have fantastic fields? Yes. Do they still put on good racing? Yes. But the events had become stale. Here's the problem, the Super DIRTcar Series is no longer the best modified racers in the country running the series together, instead, with the exception of Brett Hearn, it's turned into the best drivers from one area running the series. This isn't the 90's anymore where Kenny Brightbill, Jimmy Horton, Doug Hoffman, or Jimmy Chester are following the tour from other regions of the northeast, instead, the stars of the Super DIRTcar Series are Billy Decker, Jimmy Phelps, Matt Sheppard, Danny Johnson, Justin Haers, etc; don't misinterpret me here, those drivers ARE super stars, but there's one major problem. If you purchase a ticket to a weekly show at Brewerton or Canandaigua you're basically seeing the Super DIRTcar Series field running at your weekly home. That's great for those tracks, but why should those tracks feel enticed to pay a sanction fee to bring in the Super DIRTcar Series when they're getting more than half of the Series regulars at their track on a weekly basis?

Now, the RoC Dirt Tour started off as the little engine that could. When Andy Harpell announced the tour, not many people had high hopes for it. The first years of the tour they had a neat group of drivers that ran the tour including Bobby Varin, Mitch Gibbs, Brian Weaver, Ed Strada, Chris Shultz, Ryan Bartlett, etc. They're not the biggest names in dirt racing, but they're big enough that the fans came out to support these drivers, and the RoC Dirt Tour easily survived the first few years of existence. As the tour grew, they started to get the sexy names to follow their tour, Alan Johnson and Pat Ward were early champions, Stewart Friesen began following the tour in the early stages. In 2010, an influx of Super DIRTcar Series stars announced their intentions of following the RoC Dirt Tour as well. The fields were excellent, the racing was great, and they had an outstanding mixture of big name drivers like Danny Johnson, Duane Howard, Brett Hearn, Matt Sheppard, Stewart Friesen, Pat Ward, and so on following the tour along with some of the talented lesser known drivers like Danny Tyler, Kirk Horton, Danny Creeden; the RoC Tour in 2010 had 14 drivers attempt every race. However, 2011 paid the price for 2010. The car counts were still strong, but the influx of big money teams saw the "underbuck" teams drop off the tour. Only 6 teams attempted every RoC race this season.

Obviously, both tours have flaws, but both tours also flourished in 2011. The Super DIRTcar Series may be lacking the drivers in other area, and the RoC Dirt Tour may be lacking the full-time followers, but both tours in 2011 had fantastic crowds at every race they ran in 2011, both series had great car counts at most of their races as well; obviously, both tours are in fantastic shape right now.

However, the RoC Dirt Tour has announced that they will split up into a Northern and a Southern tour in 2011, as they did when the tour was first introduced. With the lack of full-time followers, and with Fulton and potentially Delaware being added to the 2012 RoC Dirt Tour schedule, the tour needed to limit the amount of traveling full-time followers would do in 2012. I can guarantee the RoC Tour will be a significant increase in full-time followers in 2012 because of this change. However, tracks that don't get end-of-year combo races are faced with losing some of the cars that made the RoC Tour so appealing in the past.

If I own a track that would be part of the Northern Tour, and I'm forced to choose between having a RoC or a DIRTcar race, I'm choosing RoC all the way. Its a cheaper sanction, a cheaper purse, and you're still basically going to get the same drivers you would if you were having a Super DIRTcar Series race. Hearn, Decker, Sheppard, Phelps, Ward, Friesen, Wight, D. Johnson, A. Johnson are all basically locks to be at the race, and factor in the amount of local talent that would support the local higher-paying race, it makes a lot more sense to save the extra money and have the RoC Tour at your track than the Super DIRTcar Series.

However, if I own a track that would be part of the Southern Tour (remember, Grandview is thinking of bringing back the Super DIRTcar Series to replace the RoC Dirt Tour) I'd definitely rather have the Super DIRTcar Series come to my track. With the RoC Tour splitting up, with the exception of 1-2 drivers, the RoC Southern Tour races aren't going to draw the New York talent as they have in the past. So, let's use Grandview as the example here, if Grandview were to host a RoC Southern Tour race, what they'd basically get is the same field that would show up if it was a non-sanctioned higher paying race. Sure, you'll get a couple of Penn Can drivers following the tour, and maybe a Brett Hearn, Stewart Friesen, or Danny Johnson, but the mixture of New York vs. New Jersey vs. Pennsylvania won't be as present as in the past. Now, the Super DIRTcar Series guarantees the 12-contract drivers to be at their events. You get 12 of the best New York talent at your race mixed in with the big name local and non-series regular invading drivers.

Obviously, there are exceptions to both ideas. Just wanted to give my opinion on it.

I know this was probably hard to read, I assure you the rest of these will be a little better thought out and easier to read and follow. Let me know what you guys think on the issue.

Scarborough Moving Up, Kline Hitting the Road; Rudolph Returns; Other Tidbits

Johnny Scarborough, one of Fonda Speedway's top sportsman drivers for quite some time, will be making the move up to the big-block modified division in 2012 with the help of legendary car-owner Marty Burdick (who will supply the engines). Scarborough will once again call Fonda Speedway home, but plans on doing a bit of traveling. He has confirmed to Area Auto Racing News that he will be at Volusia in February, and will also run the big-block portion of Selinsgrove.

Speaking of Selinsgrove, look for an announcement about a raised purse for both the small block and the big block races this year. They've already announced both nights will pay $300 to take the green.

Jesse Kline is in the process of purchasing a PA-Legal 358 per Randy Kane. He will use that motor and an older car to travel to select RoC events and also plans to attempt the Freedom 76er at Grandview. He will still run weekly at Orange County Fair Speedway on Saturdays, but may run a few select events with the PA-Legal 358 at Accord on Friday nights. Jesses's dad, Bruce Kline, will focus solely on racing at Orange County on Saturday nights, but with a newer chassis.

Asphalt modified star Erick Rudolph will return to dirt modifieds after a one-year absence. Rudolph will run weekly at Ransomville Speedway with some traveling mixed in. Rudolph's main focus will be on the asphalt modified division once again. He will be driving an Heinke-Baldwin Motorsports car in both asphalt and dirt modified competition.

No surprise here, but Brett Hearn has confirmed he will once again be attending Volusia in February.

Look for Grandview Speedway to replace the RoC Dirt Tour event that was on their schedule in 2011 with a return of the Super DIRTcar Series.

Lernerville Speedway is also interested in bringing the Super DIRTcar Series back to PA.

Two rumors floating around are; Team FAST, which fielded cars for Meme and A.J. DeSantis over the past few seasons, is selling out, and that Jimmy Horton is out of the Dick Biever owned #14 for 2012. Both of these tidbits are rumors, I'll see if I can dig anything up on either.

Happy Thanksgiving! Another New Series?

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and before we all stuff our faces (something I'm very good at) I wanted to thank all you guys that check out this blog. I know I don't get a ton of traffic over here, and I like it that way. Its a blast for me coming on here and chatting racing, and I know I'm not always the best at updating this thing frequently enough, so thank you guys for being patient with me on that front too. I appreciate those of you that do read, and am proud to call all of you friends. I wish all of you a very happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Now, back to business, it appears there could be a Dirt Asphalt Tour in the works for 2012. The tour, which would run Airborne dirt-rules, is still a long way from being finalized. If the tour were to go through, look for the series to only run 4-6 races in 2012, and expand in the future based on the success of this season. Airborne, Oswego, Dunn Tire, and St. Crouix are a few of the tracks being considered if the series goes through. Check back for updates.

Friesen Tidbits; Bridgeport Results

Stewart Friesen will not return to Five Mile Point Speedway weekly in 2012. He will instead call Fonda Speedway his home track in 2012 with the Tad Parks team. If Albany-Saratoga Speedway becomes DIRTcar sanctioned, Friesen will call Albany his Friday night home instead of Brewerton in the Burdick Racing 85. He will continue to drive the Tom Cullen 1wgc car at Utica Rome on Sundays, and will run the RoC and most of the Super DIRTcar Series in 2012.

Stewart Friesen will also run this weekend at Wall in the dirt and SK modified divisions. He will run the Jimmy Blewett owned 1 car he previously drove in the Friends of Mike race at New Egypt Speedway earlier in the season.

JR Motorsports Update; Langenstein to Run Mods?

As reported on here previously, Johnny Rea, owner of JR Motorsports which fielded cars for Ryan Godown in 2011, is selling out. Rea is looking to sell the equipment to Godown if sponsors help Godown acquire the equipment.

IMCA-style modified racer Austin Langenstein, sponsored by long time dirt racing supporter Rifenburg Construction, appears to be running a limited schedule of northeast big-block modified races in 2012. Stay tuned for updates on where he'll be running.

Bridgeport This Weekend

Bridgeport Speedway will host the final dirt-racing modified weekend of the season (dirt mods will run on the asphalt at Wall next weekend to officially close out 2011) with action this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is a complete show for the modifieds on the 1/4 mile as they battle it out for $1,000 to win, and on Sunday the big-block modifieds tackle the big track at Bridgeport in a 40-lap $3,000 to win feature event.

With Can Am Motorsports Park switching to Saturday nights in 2012, 3-time track champion Billy Dunn will not return to run weekly at Can Am. Instead, Dunn will continue to run weekly at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday nights. Dunn's 358 equipment is for sale.

Mitch Gibbs only ran part-time this season for the O'Hare Racing team, but in 2012 that will change. Gibbs has announced the team will run weekly on Friday nights at I-88 Speedway. He later reported in an interview on DougsDirtDiary.com that he may also run Utica Rome Speedway and do some select traveling.

Asphalt modified star, turned dirt modified chauffeur Jimmy Blewett has announced that he will add a second weekly home track to his schedule in 2012. He will run Friday nights at Big Diamond Speedway along with his weekly racing at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday nights. He also is already looking towards Super DIRT Week in October, where he will make his first attempt at the S.E.F. 200.

Multi-time Mercer Raceway Park track champion, Frank Guidace, will have a family member racing against him in 2012. Frank's 16-year old daughter, Makayla Guidace, will be a weekly competitor in the 358 division at Mercer next season. Makayla ran hot laps for Frank for most of the season, but did not run an actual race yet.

Fastnacht Done; JR Next?

Terry Fastnacht, owned of the Mike Gular #53 has decided to sell out now that the 2011 season is over. Fastnacht has been involved in fielding cars on the Pennsylvania small block scene for years for Danny Erb before teaming up with Gular. Gular won a Penn Can Speedway championship with the team, and between Erb and Gular Fastnacht was able to claim a bundle of wins at Big Diamond and Grandview as well. We wish Terry the best of luck in future.

We've heard from reliable sources that JR Motorsports may be the next team to sell out, but the rumor is unconfirmed. JR Motorsports (Johnny Rea is the owner) has fielded cars for Ryan Godown, Keith Hoffman, Jeff Strunk, Rick Laubach and has picked up multiple wins in the Coalcracker 100 and has claimed a few Big Diamond championships. Godown, who drove the car last year, may end up buying all of Rea's equipment to remain a weekly competitor at Big Diamond and Grandview. Again, these are unconfirmed reports.

Matt Sheppard picked up his second consecutive Super DIRTcar Series title with his pair of 2nd place finishes at Charlotte.

This weekend, the big blocks and small blocks will be action at Hagerstown Speedway for Octoberfest. The small blocks will be racing for $5,000 to win, with the big blocks running for $10,000 to win. Qualifying is on Saturday with feature events on Sunday afternoon. Penn Can Speedway will also have the $5,000 to win King of the Can for the big-blocks on Sunday afternoon.

I apologize for how long its been since my last post, but the internet and cable have been out at home since Saturday. Gotta love the snow.

As I'm sure you guys know, Jimmy Phelps won the only race ran last weekend while Billy Decker picked up the RoC title. Mahoning Valley's finale was canceled, Kris Graver has been crowned champion.

World Finals at the Dirt Track at Charlotte comes up this weekend on Friday and Saturday (qualifying Thursday) and New Egypt Speedway is running an open comp. show for the modifieds.

Weaver Teams with Hoffman

Brian Weaver will be teaming with Kevin Hoffman at Hagerstown this weekend for Octoberfest. Hoffman, a racer out in Western PA that runs the BRP Tour offered Weaver a ride in the small block portion of Octoberfest. Weaver, who has run the BRP Tour this season as well, accepted the ride and will also be in action in his own #1a big-block.

Entry lists are posted on HagerstownSpeedway.com, however, Dan Humes will not be in attendance as originally planned.

Per SouthJerseyDirtRacing.com, Breitenstein Motorsports is selling out. The Breitenstein team has been around for quite a few years on the Pennsylvania small block circuit, fielding cars most recently for Kenny Gilmore. They had success in the past as well with drivers including Kevin Hartnett, Keith Brightbill, and Doug Manmiller.

In a move that surprises nobody, Alan Johnson, per Dirt Track Digest, has been named the new driver for Kenny Saya. The team plans a full assault on the 2012 Super DIRTcar Series.

Now, onto the tidbits. Area Auto Racing News reported that Wade Hendrickson will take over driving duties of the Steve Kratz Racing #20 small-block modified in weekly competition at Grandview Speedway in 2012. Hendrickson will still have his own car for select big and small block races.

Sportsman standout Shane Pecore is moving up to the 358-modified division. He'll take over driving duties for the Warrior Racing Team and tentatively plans to run weekly at Mohawk International Raceway and Cornwall Motor Speedway. Pecore ran a few 358-modiifed races this season with Warrior and also in a back-up Jeff Sykes car.

Bobby Varin has parted ways with the Kenny Saya #10 team. Varin still plans on driving for Mike Romano #97 at Glen Ridge and also in the Dover Brakes Racing #00 at Fonda, and hopes to find a ride for traveling in 2012. No word on who will replace Varin with Saya, but the smart money is on Alan Johnson, who drives a car with support for Saya currently.

Coulbourne Racing has sold out, meaning that Kenny Brightbill is without a ride. The team also ran in the past with Mark Byram, Jamie Mills, and Donny Radd.

Wayne Jelley and Ryan Odasz can be added to the Eastern States roster. Odasz will be there in the Wayne Pabilski Racing 14R big-block modified. Jelley blew up his big block at Super DIRT Week, so he'll be trying to qualify his 358-modified in both the 100 and 200 lap features.

Kirk Horton has also confirmed he will be there with at least a big block, he may end up having both a big block and a small block there if they can get the 358 finished in time.

Couple of minor tidbits for Eastern States Weekend.

Scott Flammer will be in action driving for Oscar Boria. Flammer's driven for Boria on multiple different occasions. This will be Flammer's first modified race of the season.

Sportsman driver Frank Doty has purchased a big block modified for Eastern States Weekend.

Jerry Higbie has picked up a 358-ride for the 100-lap Saturday event. He will drive the Reiser Racing #33R.

Also, as previously mentioned, Frank Cozze will run the back up modified for Craig Mitchell.

Alan Johnson Teaming with Kyle Weiss at Brewerton

Alan Johnson will return to the seat of the Kyle Weiss owned #21k this Thursday night for the $7,500 to win Hurricane 100 at Brewerton Speedway. Johnson drove the car to a second place finish in the Freedom 76er at Grandview Speedway just a few weeks ago.

Johnson still has no plans to run the Syracuse mile. Weiss may enter the car at Five Mile Point on Thursday with a TBA driver as long as everything goes alright on Thursday night.

The car had been piloted by Gary Tomkins for most of the season, however, Tomkins will be in the 673 for the Fulton race, leaving the Deek Decker owned #DEUCE without a driver. Sears is a former Fulton Speedway track champion. His BJB Motorsports 62s is being prepped for Syracuse.

No word on if it will be Tomkins or Sears driving for the team at the Hurricane 100 at Brewerton Speedway during Super DIRT Week.

Whitteker Calls it a Season Early

The 2010 358-DIRTcar Series Rookie of the Year, Luke Whitteker, who currently sits in 11th in 358 Series points, starting every race on the 2011 schedule, has decided to end his season early. Whitteker will not be able to attempt Super DIRT Week due to schooling commitments, which will be a major hit in the point standings. Because of this, he's decided to end the season with Weedsport, Rolling Wheels, Syracuse, and Brockville still left on the 358-DIRTcar Series schedule.

Cozze Returning for Eastern States Weekend

Frank Cozze Sr will return to the seat of a dirt modified for Eastern States Weekend after spending the entire season running 410 sprints. Cozze will drive the backup Craig Mitchell #93x modified in the big block division. Cozze will compete in the National Open at Williams Grove and then will race in the World of Oultaws race Saturday night of Super DIRT Week at Rolling Wheels before running the modified at Orange County.

Canandaigua big-block rising star Mike O'Brien has confirmed his plans to run Syracuse next week in the big block division. O'Brien will run the Future's Race along with attempting to qualify for the S.E.F. 200.

It's been a while since I did a SDW update, so here's what I've got...

Brian McDonald will be going with a 358-modified. It'll be the same car he used last year at Syracuse, although with a new 358-motor.

Jeremiah Shingledecker will be making his first career start at Syracuse. Shingledecker will be going with the big-block. The Lernerville Speedway track champion is eligible for the Safety-Kleen Shootout that will pit all DIRTcar-sanctioned track champions against each other in a 15-lap race. Shingledecker will then attempt to qualify for the S.E.F. 200. He Will be going with his weekly Lernerville car and motor.

With Carey Terrance running so well in 358-points, Dale Planck has decided to skip running the S.E.F. 200 to focus on Carey Terrance's run in the Nationwide 150 on Saturday. Planck and Terrance will run the satellite shows.

Jeremy Wilder has had his big-block rebuilt and will be taking it to Syracuse for his first attempt to qualify for the S.E.F. 200. Wilder will also have his weekly Fonda car and the 358-motor he ran most of the season for the Nationwide 150.

Todd Burley is working on a deal to run the S.E.F. 200. If the team becomes official, he'd drive the Henry Maier #3m big block. Maier will run the team's 358-modified on Saturday.

Still nothing on Richie Tobias. He was working on a deal with Vince Gagliardo to run the S.E.F. 200 but that appears to have fallen through.

A big weekend of racing is in the books, highlighted by Duane Howard's $20,000 triumph in the Freedom 76er. With the 76er, came the announcement that the 2012 Freedom 76er will pay a whopping $50,000 to win!

Also, Kevin Hartnett clinched his first career Penn Can Speedway championship with a second place finish, and I-88 Speedway has decided to end their season after flooding at the track. Jim Gabriel has been crowned track champion. Brett Hearn didn't even have to start the season finale at Accord Speedway to be clinched track champion there. Here are the rest of the weekend results…

SDW Bash on the Backstretch Update

Just wanted to give everyone an update. We've received 2-free general admission weekend passes for the 50th running of Eastern States Weekend compliments of Orange County Fair Speedway and Michael Sanchelli! We'll be giving them away at the Bash on the Backstretch (way we give them out TBD) Friday night.

We'll be starting the Bash Friday night after the heat races are done on the mile, we'll have the adult big wheel races (trophy, oversized check, and cash to the winning team) and also a live performance by singer J.P. Shaggy! We decided to see how the turnout is this year with a live performance as opposed to a DJ, so we'll see how that goes.

The Wago Juice will be flowing and we hope everyone shows up and has a good time!

For people looking to compete in the big wheel races this year, the rules are simple. Only 3-wheels can be touching the ground at the same time. Extra wheels are allowed to prevent flipping, but they can't be touching the ground unless another wheel comes off the ground. All trikes/big wheels must have a pusher and a driver, the driver is not allowed to move the trike on his/her own. Either the front wheel or the back-2 wheels must be plastic. I understand that finding plastic wheels can be tough, so shopping cart wheels or roller-blade wheels (the plastic kind, not the rubber kind) are allowed, but must be used as the back-2. Trikes must be no wider than 32 inches.

We will do time trials and heats, in order to prevent having too many trikes in the feature (ahem... last year, that was my bad) only the winner will qualify from the heats into the feature race. 2nd place will go to a 'B' main, 3rd will go to a 'C', 4th to a 'D' etc. Then, we'll run the mains, D-winner moves to the C, C-winner moves to the B, etc. Heats will be 5-laps, feature will be 10-laps.

As previously announced (but I think I forgot to post it) Stewart Friesen will drive a second Johnny Rea-owned car at the Freedom 76er at Grandview Speedway this weekend.

Alan Johnson has now found a ride for the race, as he will pilot the Kyle Weiss-owned #21k this Saturday night at the 76er. Weiss is out for the season as he prepares for shoulder surgery.

Mike Perrotte picked up a guaranteed starting spot for the S.E.F. 200 with his win at Airborne Sunday night. Perrotte has confirmed his plans to run both a big block and a small block this year. Greg Atkins, another Airborne regular, has also announced he'll be at Super DIRT Week. The defending S.E.F. 200 Rookie of the Race qualified his 358-modified for both Saturday and Sunday at SDW in 2010, he'll try to do the same again this year.

Two more drivers have confirmed their intent to run a big block on the mile this year, as Steve Hulsizer will be there with the Harry Murphy Racing team, and Mark Flach will attempt to make his first ever S.E.F. 200.

Quebec drivers Jean Boissonneault and Jasmin Leveille have announced they'll run at Syracuse with 358-modifieds, while Willy Decker will also run the 358-race. Lance Willix, who already confirmed he'll be at the S.E.F. 200 with his #16 big block, will also drive for Kevin Gamble in the 358-race. Willix will make his return after sitting out over a month because of motor problems this weekend at Mohawk's Super DIRT Series race.

Weekend Recap; Fantasy League Update

Rex King and Jimmy Holden both did rain dances, as championship night at Sharon Speedway and Mercer Raceway Park were rained out, giving the Sharon title to King, and the Mercer championship to Holden.

Grandview ran their championship night, with Jeff Strunk coming home 12th, which was more than enough to win the track title over Duane Howard. Brett Hearn clinched the Accord Speedway title with his second place finish with 1-week left in the points-season, while Billy Pauch only has to start 1 of the twin-20s at New Egypt next week to clinch the title.

Penn Can Speedway's championship night has been postponed until next week.

Championship Weekend Results

As the season winds down, champions continue to be crowned. A boatload of championships were decided this past weekend. Here's how it all played out...

On Friday night, Glen Ridge Motorsports Park (Kenny Tremont) and Can Am Motorsports Park (Billy Dunn) were already clinched before the night began. Both drivers capped off their fine seasons with top-5 runs at their home tracks. Tremont's Glen Ridge title was his first at the track, while Dunn has now won 3-in-a-row at Can Am.

Brewerton Speedway saw Stewart Friesen enter the night as the points leader with Billy Decker and Jimmy Phelps directly behind. Friesen struggled throughout the night, and Sheppard and Phelps battled at the front of the field, with Matt Sheppard picking up the win at the title, his 2nd career at the D-shaped Dirt Demon.

Ransomville Speedway saw Pete Bicknell enter the night as the points champion with Todd Burley and Chad Brachmann hoping to steal the spotlight. All three drivers started deep in the field, and Bicknell struggled throughout the night, leaving the championship to be decided between Burley and Brachmann. Burley would finish just outside the top-5, while Brachmann would pick up the win and his first career Ransomville championship.

Big Diamond saw Jeff Strunk and Rick Laubach enter the night in a tight points battle. Laubach charged through the field, ultimately finishing 3rd, while Strunk did what he had to, finishing 7th (ultimately bumped to 6th after Ray Swinehart was DQed), netting him his 6th Big Diamond track title.

Francois Bernier and David Hebert entered the night separated by just a few points at Autodrome Granby for their 100 lapper. Hebert ran into trouble early, but soldiered on hoping for problems for Bernier. However, Bernier kept the nose clean and picked up his first career modified championship.

On Saturday night, Stewart Friesen had already clinched his second consecutive Five Mile Point title, Pete Bicknell had locked up his 21st Merrittville championship, and Danny O'Brien just needed to start the feature to win his 10th career championship at Brockville Ontario Speedway.

Canandaigua Motorsports Park had double features on the line, Justin Haers trailed Matt Sheppard by a healthy margin, but Haers cut a nice sized portion out of the points lead in the first feature, as he finished second while Sheppard finished 2nd. In the second feature, worth double-points, Haers once again finished second, but Sheppard was able to bring the car home in 3rd, picking up his 2nd career Canandaigua championship.

Lebanon Valley Speedway saw 2-championships decided, as in the big block division is was Kenny Tremont and Brett Hearn separated by just 2 points, and in the 358 division Andy Bachetti and Brett Hearn entered the night tied. Tremont went on to finish 4th, while Hearn was involved in an early crash, locking up Tremont's 13th career track title. Bachetti won the 358-feature while Hearn finished second, giving Bachetti his 3rd 358-championship at Lebanon Valley.

Orange County saw Tommy Meier and Jerry Higbie enter the final night separated by just a few points. Higbie would finish second, but Tommy Meier charged from the back 3-times after being caught up in multiple problems to win his second track title.

Fulton Speedway saw Jimmy Phelps enter the night with a comfortable points lead over Billy Decker, however, an early-crash saw Phelps lose 16-laps while making repairs, while Billy Decker went on to finish 3rd, and picked up his second consecutive Fulton title.

Airborne saw Martin Roy enter the night with a comfortable points lead over Patrick Dupree. Dupree did everything he could to win the title, as he won the feature, but Martin Roy kept the nose clean and picked up his second Airborne title.

Billy Van Pelt, Al Rudalavage, and Mike Bills entered the finale at Woodhull caught up in a very tight points chase. Rudalavage ran into problems late in the race, while Van Pelt went on to finish second and Bills ended up third, giving Van Pelt his 5th championship in a row.

Sunday saw Cornwall get rained out, but Stephane LaFrance had already clinched his first Cornwall championship.

Utica Rome Speedway has Stewart Friesen finish second, enough to lock up his third career Utica Rome championship over Bobby Varin.

Sportsmans Speedway came down to a battle between Randy Brown and veteran Joe Crawford. Crawford would pick up the win, but Brown's third place finish would be enough to give him his first career title.

Heffner wins $17,500 at LVS; Planck at Mohawk; Weekend Schedule

J.R. Heffner led wire-to-wire for his second consecutive Mr. DIRT Track USA title, picking up $17,500 for the victory. The win was the second consecutive for Heffner. The win was just the second of the year for Heffner, who's had a disappointing season.

At Mohawk in the American Revolution Mini-Series it was Dale Planck who came away with the victory. It was championship night at the track, and it was rookie Chris Raabe who took home the championship.

Billy Pauch continued his dominance at New Egypt Speedway was his 2nd Tuesday-night victory in 2-weeks, as he picked up the $3,000 victory. He now has 12 wins on the season, all of which have come at New Egypt.

Stewart Friesen has also been enjoying a solid season, after Jim Gabriel blew a tire late in the race while leading, Friesen passed Steve Hulsizer for the lead and never looked back, picking up his 18th win of the season, tying him with Matt Sheppard for the most on the year. I-88 Speedway is the sixth track Friesen has won at this year, he's also picked up victories at Volusia, Brewerton, Five Mile Point, and Utica Rome.

Danny Johnson was driving for Mark Forte Sr tonight at New Egypt. Also, we've learned that Jim Crawn has decided to once again enter retirement. The former Five Mile Point big block champion picked up a victory earlier this year at Thunder Mountain Speedway. Brian Malcolm will run for the team that Crawn vacated the rest of the year.

New Egypt & I-88 Tonight

Two big races are tonight (Tuesday) August 30th. First up, the Thunder on the Thruway Series invades I-88 Speedway for a $5,000-to-win event for the big block modifieds. Also tonight, the big block modifieds battle for $3,000 to win at New Egypt Speedway.

Shingledecker wins Title; Other Weekend Results

Mr. DIRT Track USA Postponed: Weekend Schedule

The $17,500 to win Super DIRTcar Series race at Lebanon Valley Speedway was postponed last night after mulitple rain showers rolled through the area. The race will take place next Thursday, September 1st.

Here's the weekend schedule this weekend, Lernerville Speedway will crown their 2011 track champion Friday night for all divisions, including the big block modifieds. Another down-to-the-wire points battle is taking place, as 3 drivers have a shot at the title tomorrow night. Jeremiah Shingledecker leads Dave Murdick by just 10 points heading into the season-finale, with defending champion Kevin Bolland sitting ust 23 points behind Shingledecker.

Also, please note, with Big Diamond having a non-winner's race that isn't open to anyone to compete in, while I will post the results here on Monday, the winner's victory won't be added to the 2011 win total for big/small block modifieds.

Pauch Spins and Wins

Billy Pauch continued his big season at New Egypt with his 12th win of the year. Pauch spun early in the event but charged up through, passing Duane Howard for the lead with 10-laps to go. Howard soon pulled off the race track. Pauch then survived a late race surge by Jimmy Horton to pick up the 40-lap, $3,000 victory.

Well, I've been slacking on the tidbits lately, so here's what I've got recently...

Another schedule change took place, the $7,711 to win 77 lap feature scheduled for September 2nd at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park has now been moved to September 5th. The September 2nd race will now be a regular show that will crown the 2011 track champions.

A few SDW tidbits, Ted Christopher will attack Syracuse for the first time and will be driving the Bartemy Racing big block modified. Rick Laubach, Rob Bellinger, Jackie Brown, and Donnie Corellis have all confirmed they'll be at SDW with a big block.

Henry Maier and Tommy Flannigan will be at Syracuse with 358s.

End-of-the-year Scheduled Changes

So, a rare weekend post, but I knew if I waited I'd be all kinds of confused.

So, first of all, Big Diamond Raceway has now swapped the dates of the non-winners race (sportsman have a big race that night and are the headline division) to August 26th. Championship night, originally planned for August 26th, will now take part during their popular Coalcracker Weekend, and will be that Friday, September 2nd.

Penn Can Speedway has also changed the date of the Four-Crown Series King of the Can 100. Originally scheduled for October 16th, the track has changed the date to October 14th. There are no other events scheduled for the 14th, while there are a few scheduled for the 16th.

Bridgeport Postponed; Weekend Schedule

Bridgeport Speedway's latest big-block modified event has been postponed for the second time in less than a week. This time, the tentative make-up date is September 24th.

Brett Hearn picked up 2 wins at Fonda Speedway on Wednesday night to pick up the historic 800th victory of his amazing career.

Hearn passed Alton Palmer on the final lap to win feature #1, and held off a hard-charging Matt DeLorenzo to win the second race.

Fantasy League, SDW Tidbits, and Racing

There's the link to the updated Wago Fantasy League standings after race #3, New Egypt Speedway's Friend's of Mike race. Sorry about the slow update, it won't happen again.

Penn Can has been postponed, a rain date will be announced in the future. Tonight (Wednesday), Fonda Speedway has a complete show and the make up rain date from earlier in the year, both races are Thunder Series events.

Tom Mayberry drove the Roger Updegrove 00 big block modified at Grandview last week. Despite the surprise entry, look for Ray Swinehart to still run some end of the year shows with the team.

Travis Braun has indicated that he will run the full 358 Tour this season, Braun is having a great season already picking up 2 wins at Merrittville Speedway. Braun will run the 358 race at Syracuse.

Jeremy Wilder is rebuilding the big block he blew earlier in the year at Fonda Speedway while leading. He will either run Syracuse with the big block, or run the World Finals with his big block, the decision will be made at a later time. He will be at Syracuse for sure with the 358.

Jimmy Horton, David Hébert, and Rich Scagliotta have announced that they will run big blocks and small blocks at Syracuse this year.

Tim Currier, Justin Haers, and Peter Britten have announced they will run Syracuse with their big blocks. Currier and Britten will be eligible to run the Futures race.

Bob Lineman Racing will not field a car at Syracuse this year, which means Richie Tobias is currently looking for a ride.

Plans are being finalized for Ted Christopher to make his first ever Super DIRT Week start in the Bartemy Racing #2 big block modified. This is the same car he won the New Jersey Motorsports Park race in 2010. The Bartemy team will be at Syracuse with two 358 modifieds, for Adam and Aaron Bartemy.

Alan Johnson looks to be going to Syracuse as a teammate to Bobby Varin for the Kenny Saya-owned team. Johnson has driven for the team in select events this year. The team Johnson drove for last season, as previously noted, will be driven by Brian Swarthout this year as he attempts to qualify for the '200.' He owns the car Johnson drove last year.

The Super DIRT Week XL schedule has now been released and is posted on SuperDIRTWeekonline.com

Both Brian Swarthout and Tony Steiner have announced they'll be running Super DIRT Week with both a big block and a small block this year. Swarthout fielded a car for Alan Johnson last year at Syracuse, which means Johnson is once again currently left without a ride for SDW.

Ryan Godown has also confirmed his plans to run at Super DIRT Week with a big block this year.
