Van Pelt and Susice Team Up

Nobody has more wins or more championships in the modified division at Woodhull Raceway than Billy Van Pelt, but the legendary driver didn't have anything lined up for 2014 after the Chilson Racing team announced they were selling out at the conclusion of 2013, until he got a call from Susice Motorsports.

Susice Motorsports announced over the week that Van Pelt has inked a deal to run as a teammate to rising star Ryan Susice in a second Susice-prepared car for at least 2 races (Alex Friesen SummerNationals Super DIRTcar Series race and Battle of the Border 358 DIRTcar Series event--both at Ransomville Speedway) in 2014.

In the same press release Susice announced in addition to running weekly at Ransomville, he would add Merrittville to his weekly schedule in 2014.

News has been slow as of late, but expect a bunch of announcements after the holiday season. AARN's Motorsports show January 10-11-12 always provides a ton of news and is an "unofficial kickoff" towards the 2014 season.

Petrilak will focus on weekly competition at Five Mile Point Speedway and may travel to some RoC shows.

Boniface and Petrilak join Jenna David, Jared Umbenhauer, Brett Kressley, and Matt Janczuk who have all announced plans to move up to the modified division for 2014 earlier in the off-season.

Brett Deyo has announced the final schedule for the innagural "Short Track Super Series".

There are 3 Deyo-promoted events that are not part of the Short Track Super Series, the "Dirty Jersey 60" which will be held at New Egypt Speedway on June 17 (my apologies--as I originally reported this would be part of the series), the "Kind of the Can" which will be held October 17th at Penn Can Speedway, and "The Gobbler" which will be held November 29 at Accord Speedway.

Also, the Penn Can date has been moved from June to August.

Here's the schedule...

July 23- I-88 Speedway
August 5- Accord Speedway
August 12- Penn Can Speedway

Deyo adds Thunder Mountain to Short Track Super Series

Brett Deyo has officially added Thunder Mountain Speedway to the innagural "Short Track Super Series" schedule.

Thunder Mountain, now back under the leadership of Karl Spoonhower, will hold arguably the tracks biggest race on Tuesday, May 20th. The race will pay $5,000 to win the 50-lap feature.

Deyo has also announced early this week that his "Hard Clay Open" will set the modified field via a passing points system, which will award points for finishing position AND number of positions gained in the heat race. The consi races will run as normal with the top finishers advancing to the feature.

Cornwall Motor Speedway Sold

Quebec's premier racing website, 360nitro.com is reporting that Cornwall Motor Speedway has been sold. Multiple parties were immediately interested in purchasing the top-notch facility after owner Ron Morin made it public that the track was for sale last year, most notably Autodrome Drummond's leader and modified driver Yan Bussiere, although it doesn't appear Bussiere's offer was accepted. The buyers name has not yet been released.

According to the report, the track will become "Cornwall International Speedway" but will see a similar schedule to what Morin had in place over the past few seasons. Three dates have already been announced for 2014, with the Super DIRTcar Series invading the track June 29, and the 358 DIRTcar Series in action on May 18 and August 31. Expect a formal announcement about the sale sometime in January.

Ron Morin took control of the 1/4 mile bullring in 1980 and has turned it into one of the premier facilities in the northeast. The entire article is available by clicking here. If you don't speak French, simply copy and paste the article into "Google Translate."

Evans Mills Speedway Drops Modifieds; Ransomville Confirms Another Date

Evans Mills Speedway has announced that the modified division will not return to the facility in 2014 following a disappointing season that rarely saw more than 8 modifieds in attendance for weekly competition. Jordan McCreadie was the modified champion last year.

Ransomville Speedway has announced another big race in preparation for the 2014 season. The 358 DIRTcar Series will invade the track on Wednesday, July 2nd, for the Battle at the Border. Chad Brachmann is the defending winner of the event.

Ransomville Speedway added to '14 Super DIRTcar Series Schedule

Ransomville Speedway has been announced as the 20th track on the 2014 Super DIRTcar Series schedule. It's also the eighth track added to the Series schedule that was not on the tour in 2013.

The big-blocks will make their return to the Niagara region 3/8 mile on Tuesday, August 5th--the day after Merrittville Speedway's Super DIRTcar Series. This event will replace the trip to I-96 Speedway, which will be the only track not to return to the Series schedule in '14 (despite I-96 wanting the tour back, officials decided it was too much travel for their teams.)

Ransomville will once again run under DIRTcar sanction with the 358-modifieds as their premier division. They will also host the 358 DIRTcar Series as they have the past few seasons with a summer date that will be announced at a later date.

Brett Hearn won the last Super DIRTcar Series race at Ransomville, which was held in July of 2009.

The 2014 Master schedule for big/small block modifieds is post (link available to the left). We'll be updating it throughout the off-season as schedules and race dates are released.

New Egypt Announced Northeast Kick Off

New Egypt Speedway has announced that they will open their doors on Saturday, March 1st, for a 50-lap feature for the big-block modifieds. The race will also have an open tire rule. The track will announce more information regarding the event tomorrow (Thursday).

This will mark the earliest New Egypt Speedway has opened since it became a dirt track in 1998. It will also mark the first races in the northeast for the modified division. The dirt modified season will officially kick off at Volusia Speedway Park the week prior (February 19-22) down in Florida.

Tuesday Tidbits

In a move that will surprise nobody, Jeff Heotzler has officially been named the full-time driver of the Mel Schrufer Racing #84 in '14. The duo has not yet decided where they will run weekly, but they're leaning towards competing weekly at Orange County Fair Speedway, which would allow Heotzler to run weekly at Accord in his own equipment.

Ryan Phelps has announced on Doug's Dirt Diary that he will return to full-time Super DIRTcar Series action in '14. Phelps follows Larry Wight and Billy Decker as the third driver to announce his return to the Series after taking time away.

New Egypt Speedway has announced that the All-Star Challenge will return in '14, albeit with a date change. The race will be moved to Saturday, September 20th this coming season after being held the first Thursday in October in 2013.

Lebanon Valley Speedway regular Jimmy Burns is selling out and getting out of the sport. Burns, who finished 15th in points this past season, was a former feature winner at Lebanon Valley.

Brownell back with Brownell

When Matt Sheppard parted ways with JB Motorsports the rumors started circulating that the team was getting out of racing. Today, he's announced that Jeff Brownell Jr will return to the seat of the JB Motorsports team aboard using the #29.

Brownell Jr won 2 Glen Ridge Motorsports Park titles aboard the JB Motorsports #29 in the late 2000s. The team will call Glen Ridge home and will determine a traveling schedule later in the off-season.

Last Racing Weekend of the year; Sheppard to HBR; David Moving Up

A fantastic 2013 season will officially come to a close Saturday afternoon with two big races concluded the year. Tomorrow (Saturday) Wall Speedway hosts a 50-lap $2,000-to-win feature for the dirt modifieds during the Turkey Derby, also Accord Speedway hosts "The Gobbler" in another 50-lap $7,711-to-win feature event.

The big news on Wednesday night was the official announcement that Matt Sheppard would be heading to Heinke-Baldwin Racing in 2014 to run as a teammate to Jimmy Phelps. Despite many rumors, JB Motorsports team owner Jeff Brownell has not decided on whether or not he will sell his equipment and get out of racing, or return with a new driver in '14.

Warrior Racing's Jenna David will make the move up to the modified division after a career-best year in sportsman in 2013. David will run weekly at Mohawk International Raceway and Cornwall Motor Speedway, while also following the DIRTcar 358 Series in 2014. She joins Katelyn Kane, Kim LaVoy, and Aleia Geisler as the only women drivers in the big/small block ranks.

Gypsum Racing Follow-up; Ricci Back with Batzel

About a month ago I posted that it looked like there were big changes coming to Gypsum Racing in 2014. I saw someone asked for updates regarding the news on DirtTrackDigest.com, so here's a follow-up and update to that post.

The big news that was hinted at was in regards to Billy Decker and his future with Gypsum Racing. Decker has been disappointed with the in-house engine program that all the Gypsum Racing teams use, and had internal discussions about leaving the team at the conclusion of 2014.

Decker, who's been the face of the Gypsum Racing team for the past decade, has not yet decided on his plans for 2014 and technically remains a free agent. With that being said, the Gypsum team had a #91 car at last weekend's Parts Peddler, and the team is already preparing for 2014 in the race shop as if Decker will be there next season. We'll continue to track down updates, but right now it looks like the Gypsum/Decker combination will return in 2014. There will be no significant changes to the 42p and 99L Gypsum teams.

Mike Ricci will return to the seat of the Jamie Batzel J27 for this weekend's "Gobbler" at Accord Speedway. Ricci nearly pulled off a win aboard the Batzel machine in last month's Southern Tier 100 at Five Mile Point Speedway, ultimately settling for second. The Batzel team competed weekly with Brian Weaver at Five Mile Point Speedway, and notched a win. Since then the team has had a couple different drivers in their equipment for the end of the year shows.

Canandaigua Stick with DIRT; Five Mile Point Responds; New Egypt Ups the Purse; More Drivers Moving Up

Plenty of tidbits here this Thursday afternoon. Remember, the Parts Peddler is currently taking place (and will be throughout the weekend) up at the New York State Fairgrounds. A couple of drivers have their 2014 cars there. Be sure to check out the pictures posted throughout the weekend on the other great media sites (links to the left.)

Now, let's jump into the news. There were lots of questions surrounding Canandaigua Motorsports Park as Jeremie Corcoran expressed his frustration with the organization. Those questions can now be laid to rest as Canandaigua has announced they will once again be DIRTcar sanctioned in 2014. Even more exciting, the Super DIRTcar Series will return to the "Land of Legends" on April 19th for the Jan Corcoran Memorial. The Series last competed at Canandaigua in the spring of 2012.

As expected, Five Mile Point Speedway has responded to Brett Deyo moving the Short Track SuperNationals to I-88 Speedway by announcing their own race. Andrew Harpell has announced a $5,000-to-win, $500-to-start, 50-lap feature event for the modifieds. Rules will be similar to the Short Track SuperNationals with the exception of sail panels. The race will be held October 11, the same night as the Short Track SuperNationals at I-88.

New Egypt Speedway head-honcho Fred Vahlsing has kept the positive racing news coming by announcing the the modifieds will run for $2,500 to win on a weekly basis in 2014. The purse will be increased throughout the field.
Three more young talents are moving to the modified division full-time next season. All three have a few modified starts under there belt, and all three were very impressive in those runs.

Utica Rome Speedway sporstman champion, Matt Janczuk, has announced he will be moving up to the modified division full-time in 2014 at Utica Rome Speedway. Janzuk hopes to do some traveling as well.

Kyle Merkel has traded in his late model for a new Bicknell after a very impressive late model career. The young hotshoe will be running weekly at Big Diamond. Expect Merkel to support the Brett Deyo promoted shows while hitting some end of the year specials.

Following a very sportsman campaign, Brett Kressley will be running weekly in the modified division weekly at Big Diamond. Kressley hopes to run some local big-money shows, and will also have his sportsman equipment. Kressley's father, Brian, will continue to run the team's big-block on a part-time basis.

Deyo Day

Hopefully none of you guys are too depressed as we face our first weekend with no racing scheduled since early March. Fret not, as there are still 2 races left for the mighty modifieds as next weekend they tackle the asphalt during the fabled Turkey Derby Weekend for a 50-lapper and also Brett Deyo's "Gobbler" comes to life at Accord Speedway.

Speaking of Brett Deyo, he's stealing all the headlines today.

After hosting the Short Track SuperNationals at Five Mile Point Speedway for the past 5-seasons, Deyo has announced that the event will return to the facility where the Short Track SuperNationals was born, I-88 Speedway. The innagural Short Track SuperNationals were ran at I-88 (then known as Afton Speedway) in October of 2006. The "working man's race" will continue to be held during Super DIRT Week. Don't be surprised to see Five Mile Point also schedule a race this night.

Deyo has also announced another new promotion, the "Hard Clay Open." The event will be held on Sunday, March 23 at Orange County Fair Speedway. The modifieds will race for at least $5,000 to win and $500 to start.

As I already stated, Deyo's season will conclude in 2-weeks with "The Gobbler." A couple of one-off deals have been announced for that race. Jimmy Davis will jump aboard Elmo Reckner's back-up for the race--and Mike Kolka has landed a ride aboard Everett Haubrich's small block.

Schrufer Retires; Moore Returns

One driver is retiring, while another is making a return.

Mel Schrufer, longtime supporter and multiple time feature winner at both Accord and Orange County has announced he will be stepping out of the #84 modified. Schrufer is the third driver to announce his retirement this year, following Dave Lape and Todd Burley. Schrufer has announced that he will remain in the sport as a car owner. Jeff Heotzler has piloted the Schrufer cars at Eastern States and at the 1/4 Mile Nationals.

While Schrufer announced his retirement, Davey Moore will be making his return to the seat of a modified this year. The Hall of Famer has been retired for nearly 15 years, but will be making his return to the seat of a big-block for weekly competition at Canandaigua Motorsports Park this season. Look for more information on this story to be released in the next few weeks.

Burley Announces Retirement; Utica Rome Announces Nascar; Bernier & Umbenhauer Announce Moves

Todd Burley has announced he will retire from modified racing. Burley, a multi-track champion, ran weekly at Ransomville and Utica Rome this season, picking up 3 wins this season and finishing in the top-5 in points at both speedways. We wish Todd all the best, and will miss seeing the popular 89B (and the 16B) on the track.

Also stealing headlines, Utica Rome Speedway has announced that they will return to Nascar sanctioning this season. Utica Rome will also host the RoC Dirt Tour, and the Super DIRTcar Series this season, and has also announced that they will make their only conflicting date with the Super DIRTcar Series a non-points race to allow their drivers to follow the tour.

Two drivers have announced they will make the full-time jump to the modified division in 2014. Granby sportsman champion Steve Bernier will try to dethrone his brother, two-time defending Granby small block champion Francois Bernier, in 2014. Steve Bernier ran a couple of late season events with the small block, and even picked up a win in a special $6,000-to-win 150 lap event at the big 1/2 mile.

Jared Umbenhauer, the Big Diamond and Grandview sportsman champion from this season, will move up to full-time small block competition after running part-time the past few seasons. The Derfler Motorsports team will move up with Umbenhauer to field a car for him at Big Diamond, while the Eastern Rigging Racing #11 will field a car for Umbenhauer in special shows.

Fulton and Fonda make DIRTcar Announcements; Spotts Chooses Driver; World Finals

Fonda Speedway's exciting off-season continues as Matt DeLorenzo has announced that the Super DIRTcar Series will be making it's return to the "Track of Champions" on September 21st.

Fulton Speedway has finally announced they they will be joining DIRTcar for the 2014 season as well. Notably, big-blocks will return as the headline division, but 358s that compete as Fulton will also receive home-track DIRTcar 358 points, similar to what Humberstone Speedway did in 2013. Expect Weedsport to do a similar deal with their modified division when they announce their 2014 plans.

Rick Laubach will return to the Gary Spotts Racing #91 for weekly competition at Big Diamond Raceway next season. Laubach ran the car in select specials towards the end of the season after the team parted ways with Tim Buckwalter. Expect an announcement on Buckwalter's new ride in a few weeks. Laubach will do select travling with the Spotts team, and will continue to run Bridgeport and other big-block races with the Gary & Lori Herman owned #7.

The 2013 RoC Dirt Tour Champion is......... going to be crownd in 2014

As the racing season continues to wind down, the weekend schedules become emptier. This past weekend, Five Mile Point Speedway was in the spotlight as the Southern Tier 100, which was the season finale for the RoC Dirt Tour, was the only race scheduled this weekend for the modifieds, but Mother Nature was the victor.

A threatening forecast forced management to postpone the event until this Saturday, November 9. However, due to the World Finals hosting the point finale for the Super DIRTcar Series that night, the Southern Tier 100 will now be a non-sanctioned event. The RoC Dirt Tour will wait to crown their 2013 champion until April of 2014--when the modifieds make their season debut at the 1/4 mile. Stewart Friesen has a comfortable lead over Matt Sheppard in the standings.

The BRP Tour crowned their 2012 champion in March of this year after the Saturday portion of the Steal City Stampede was postponed (the Fight-qualifying portion of the event was run on schedule last October which led to the strange circumstance). Brian Weaver ultimately won the title.

DeLorenzo Takes over Fonda and goes DIRTcar Sanction; Fulton Announcement Monday

Fonda Speedway has announced that Matt DeLorenzo/BBL Companies will take over the lease of the historic track, and jump to DIRTcar sanction in 2014. Fonda was one of DIRTcar's premier tracks until the early 2000s when Ric Lucia decided to go the independant route. Fonda has not hosted any modified-sanctioned races since the last time the RoC Dirt Tour was there. Fonda and DIRTcar are currently working on securing a Super DIRTcar Series race at the track for this summer.

Fonda joins Big Diamond, Glen Ridge, Weedsport, and Brewerton as tracks that announced they will jump to DIRTcar sanctioning for next season.

Fulton Speedway will be announcing their 2014 plans this coming Monday. All reports have them joining DIRTcar, but it is still unclear whether big blocks or small blocks will be the headline division at the home of the Outlaw 200. It was announced at Super DIRT Week that the 2014 Super DIRTcar Series will kick off at Fulton Speedway in late April.

Airborne Goes Nascar & DIRTcar

Airborne Speedway recently announced they were going to Nascar sanction, seemingly ending their partnership with DIRTcar. However, it has been announced that only the support divisions will be Nascar sanctioned next season. The modified division will remain sanctioned by DIRTcar.

DIRTcar Momentum Continues; Other Tidbits

We've still got over a month of racing to go in the 2013 season, but the 2014 off-season has already been exciting for modified racing fans.

Monday I had posted that the Norm Hansell Racing seat was open for 2014. Brett Deyo has corrected me, and informed me that Norm and Frank Cozze have worked out a deal that will see Cozze return to the 357 next season. Expect the team to run a similar schedule to what they did in 2013.

The Rogue Motorsports #22 and the Gary Spotts Racing #91 seats have already been filled for next season, look for announcements from those teams coming shortly.

The modified division at Big Diamond Raceway will be DIRTcar-sanctioned for the first time ever in 2014. An official announcement will be out from DIRTcar/Big Diamond on Thursday, and an interview with Big Diamond's leader Jake Smulley appears in this week's Area Auto Racing News.

Speaking of DIRTcar, look for an announcement on the 2014 leadership at Fonda to be made by next week. Matt DeLorenzo/BBL are still the leading candidates to take over the facility, and if it happens Fonda Speedway will be DIRTcar-sanctioned for next season as well.

Look for a big announcement regarding the 2014 Short Track Super Nationals later this off-season.

Danny Johnson Lands Ride; DIRT Keeps Growing; Early Look at the Off-Season

Danny Johnson will pilot return to the seat of the Randy Chrysler owned #21K during this weekend's Eastern States Weekend. Johnson and Chrysler have teamed up before with success running weekly at Ransomville in the past.

Look for an announcement in the near future about another track that has jumped to DIRT-sanction for 2014.

Here's an early look at some of the rides that we know are already open for 2014..

Mike Petruska Racing #66 (2013 drivers Bobby Varin, Danny Johnson, Stewart Friesen)
Norm Hansell Racing #357 (2013 driver Frank Cozze)
Gary Spotts Racing #91 (2013 drivers Tim Buckwalter, Rick Laubach)
Rogue Racing #22 (2013 driver Tommy Scheetz)
Jim Reid Racing (2013 drivers Brad Grim, Mike Gular)

****UPDATE: Just received confirmation from multiple sources that the Norm Hansell ride is NOT open. Frank Cozze will remain in the car next year.

Tracks Making 2014 Plans; Howard/BPG & Johnson/Petruska Split; Gypsum?

Ah, I wish it was last week at this time. I can't explain how much I love Super DIRT Week, hell, I go into a semi-depression mode for a few days when it's all over for the year. Oh well, 356 days until Super DIRT Week XLIII. Now, let's get caught up on some news...

The big news was the 2014 Super DIRTcar Series schedule. DIRTcar released an early-version of the Series schedule that includes 20 dates and 18 tracks. Big Diamond Raceway, Glen Ridge Motorsports Park, Weedsport Speedway, Fulton Speedway, and Utica Rome Speedway are all new additions to the schedule. The only track from the 2013 schedule that will not be back is I-96 Speedway in Michigan. The facility wanted the Series to return, but DIRTcar has decided that it was in the best interest of the teams not to force it's teams to make the long haul.

The only tracks that have multiple Super DIRTcar Series events scheduled are Autodrome Drummond (dates in July and September) and The Dirt Track at Charlotte (back-to-back races at the World Finals).

DIRTcar also officially announced that Brewerton and Glen Ridge would return to being sanctioned by DIRTcar in 2014. There are as many as 5 more tracks that are seriously looking into running under DIRTcar sanction.

Fulton Speedway is seriously considering running 358s as their weekly division. From what I can gather, while it is a possibilty, more than likely the facility will stick with the big-blocks.

Weedsport Speedway is still unsure of their plans for 2014. They may end up running a schedule for big-blocks similar to what Humberstone Speedway did this past season, scheduling 8-10 races with a point fund to give drivers DIRT home-track points.

Speaking of Humberstone Speedway, Clinton Geoffrey confirmed that the big-blocks will be back again in 2014, even with the influx of new tracks sanctioning big-blocks.

New Egypt Speedway and Utica Rome Speedway appear to be the only 2 tracks that will host both the Super DIRTcar Series and the RoC Dirt Tour at some point in 2014.

Thunder Mountain Speedway has officially announced that Carl Spoonhower will take over the facility for 2014 and will bring the modifieds back as the headlining class. Spoonhower has already began putting new clay onto the track.

Now, onto driver news. BPG Racing has announced (again) that they are getting out of racing. Look for driver Duane Howard to team up full-time with Glenn Hyneman for 2014 and switch to running weekly at Bridgeport Speedway. Howard will also run more races aboard the Dick Biever 14 in special shows.

Danny Johnson and Mike Petruska Motorsports have parted ways. The third stint between Johnson and Petruska resulted in only 1 win, which came at the RoC Dirt Tour event at Utica Rome Speedway. Stewart Friesen will drive the Petruska 66 at the Eastern States 200. The team is unsure of their plans for 2014. Danny Johnson will be aboard his own #27J in both big-block and small block competition this weekend during the DIRTcar Fall Nationals at Brockville Ontario Speedway. He's looking for a ride beyond that point.

Don't be surprised to see big changes coming to Gypsum Racing for the 2014 season. Stay tuned for updates.
