Weekend Tidbits

With the rescheduling of Eastern States to this weekend, and the Delaware State Championships coming up this weekend, there are some tidbits. As posted earlier, the PPB Racing Team has parked their cars, which means that Billy Pauch Jr will be running some other cars at Delaware Internsional Speedway this weekend. He'll be in the MAD Motorsports #11D small block, and the Rick Clay Racing #88c big block.

Jimmy Horton, who was scheduled to start the Eastern States 200 outside of the top 30 driving the Jerry Wildrick owned #27 big block modified, will scatch from the fiel and will run the Delaware State Championships for car owner Dick Biever in both big and small block races. No word if anyone will take over the #27.

Tim Fuller, according to Dirt Track Digest, is going to try to fly to Orange County Fair Speedway to run the Eastern States 200. Fuller is the pole sitter for the race, but has the World Finals at the Dirt Track at Lowes this weekend.

Danny Johnson will return to the seat of the Randy Sherlock Racing #10 big block modified, the team blew an engine in qualifying and will have to come from deep in the consi. Also, Bruce Kline will return to run the consi in David Van Horn's back up #71.

Despite some rumors, Pat Ward will run the Eastern States 200. In the Gypsum Racing car, rumors reported that he would miss the event because of the Utica Rome banquet, but he'll be able to attend the banquet after the race. Also, look for Larry Wight to tack onto the back of the consi.

The Vinnie Salerno team will also be back at Eastern States, with their first big block modified since the theft of their hauler, and lots of their equipment earlier this year. Storms qualified for the 200 with a 358, but will run the big block on Saturday.

PPB Racing Sitting out For 2010

PPB Racing car owner Bob Greene has announced, through a press release released by Brett Deyo, that the team will sit out 2010. The team recently announced that Craig Von Dohren would join Billy Pauch Jr at Grandview and Biamond, as well as big block specials throughout the east coast, however, plans have changed. Greene will focus on his business, Pioneer Pole Building, hopefully for just 2010, however, it's not for certain that the team will return in 2011.

Look for Von Dohren to return to Mike Harvey Racing next year, to what scale is unclear. No word on where Pauch Jr will end up. Pauch Jr will race this weekend at Delaware International for the Delaware State Championships, he'll drive the MAD Motorsports 11D small block, whom with he's won with before, and will drive the Rick Clay Racing #88c big block. We wish Bob Greene the best of luck and hope to see his team back on track in 2011.

Friesen Wins Battle; Ward Takes the War

The RoC Dirt Tour had their season finale pushed back one day (Mahoning Valley and Bridgeport also had their races rained out Saturday) to Sunday afternoon. Stewart Friesen took the lead around the 1/2 point in the 100 lap Southern Tier 100 feature event for the big block modifieds, and proceeded to dominate the second half of the event, to collect the $6,555 win. Danny Johnson picked up a ride in Joey Grammes' second modified, and drove it to a second place finish, Tim McCreadie, Joey Grammes, and Pat Ward rounded out the top 5. Brett Hearn faded late in the race, as he fell back to 8th in the final finishing order, it allowed Pat Ward to secure his second RoC Dirt Tour title in as many years, giving him his 3rd championship of 2009, he also picked up the Florida Dirt Tour Title back in February, and won the Utica Rome Speedway track championship.

Tidbits

As the season continues to draw to a close, some 2010 news is starting to take form.

Kory Sandstedt will apparently not be back behind the wheel of the Dwyer Racing #88 big block modified in 2010. After having some strong runs in the big block division, Sandstedt ended up 15th in the final Lebanon Valley big block points standings. He finished 6th in 358 points at Lebanon Valley as well, behind the wheel of his family-owned #80. Look for the 88 to partner up with another team in 2010, and expect a number change for the team.

Two big name sportsman drivers are making the jump to big block modified in 2010, and both have already ran at least one big block race at the end of 2009. Grant Hilfiger, the 2008 and 2009 Penn Can Speedway sportsman champion, will be one of the guys moving up. Hilfiger will pilot his own #78 modified weekly at Penn Can in 2010, and hopes to run some other specials with his car. Also, expect to see him running some races at Orange County Fair Speedway, along with some select Super Dirt Series shows with the Nick Noll Racing #6n, although that's not 100% official. The 2009 Utica Rome Speedway sportsman champion, Jason Rood, will also be making the jump. Rood plans to run Utica Rome next season, and will also be running some of the big end of the year races.

Also, according to South Jersey Dirt Racing, look for Frank Cozze to return full-time to the Super Dirt Series in 2010.

Remember, racing season still isn't over! Bridgeport Speedway has a Tri-Track Series race for the big block modifieds on Saturday, and Five Mile Point has the 1/4 Mile Nationals on tap as the RoC Dirt Tour has their season finale on Saturday night. Finally, Mahoning Valley Speedway has big blocks as part of their season finale scheduled for Saturday as well!

Club Wago Crown Jewel Fantasy League Standings Updated after Octoberfest

There are the Club Wago Crown Jewel Fantasy League Standings updated after races #13 and 14 at Hagerstown Speedway for Octoberfest. Only 1 more races to go, the Eastern States 200 on November 7th! Remember, the winner will recieve a 2010 season pass to the track of their choice (thank you Zach Aubertine Motorsports), and will recieve a free 6-month subscription to Area Auto Racing News (thank you Area Auto Racing News)! Also, thanks again for everyone that participated this year!

Hearn and McCreadie Win Big at Octoberfest; Rougeux Claims BRP Finale but Another Is King of Tour

Hagerstown Speedway had their annual Octoberfest 350 ran, as the top four dirt racing divisions, big block modifieds, small block modifieds, super late models, and 410 sprints took on the 1/2 mile for $10,000 to win each division. In the big block modifieds, it was Brett Hearn who held off an exciting late race charge by J.R. Heffner to claim the $10,000 prize, Heffner finished second, rounding out the top 5 were Pat Ward, Ryan Godown, and Jimmy Horton.

In the small block portion of Octoberfest, Frank Cozze took the early lead from Brett Hearn, but was sent to the rear for tampering with the right rear tire during the lap 50 fuel stop. Cozze opted to retire from the event after that point. Tim McCreadie took advantage of Cozze's misfortune to go on to dominate the 100 lap feature and claim that $10,000 top prize, MeMe DeSantis finished second, Billy Pauch Jr, Billy Decker, and Jeff Strunk rounded out the top 5.

Also, the BRP Modified Tour invaded Lernerville Speedway for their season finale, as part of Steel City Stampede Weekend. Alan Johnson started 20th on the 21 car field, and made a charge and challenged for the lead late in the race, but it was Del Rougeux who went on to collect the feature win. Johnson finished second, rounding out the top 5 were Jeremiah Shingledecker, Joe Crawford, and Rex King. With King's 5th place finish, it allowed him to claim the BRP Tour championship.

Also, Albany-Saratoga Speedway saw the big block modified make their first start on the black top. Matt DeLorenzo dominated the feature and picked up the win. Promotor Bruce Richards announced that the track will remain asphalt, and also Devils Bowl Speedway will also be asphalt in 2010.

Wago Fantasy League Standings Finally Up!

First, some quick tidbits. Penn Can Speedway has postponed the King of the Can race until next season. Hagerstown Speedway got Octoberfest qualifying in Yesterday, Danny Johnson is in Will Brown's #1w big block, Dale Planck is, for the third time this season, driving the JB Motorsports #29 car in both big and small block competition for the weekend. Brad Brightbill is driving Ray Caroll Racing's #19 small block. Lernerville Speedway also got Steel City Stampede qualifying in Yesterday, which features the BRP Big Block Tour finale. Only out of the ordinary ride out there is Alan Johnson is driving Kevin Bolland's #777 big block modified.


Here are the Fantasy League Standings finally updates after the Rite-Aid 200! Only 3 races remain, Octoberfest for big and small blocks, and then the Eastern States 200.

Barry Davis Retiring; DTD DIRTiest Camper Winners!

Barry Davis, long-time modified driver at Accord Speedway, who's also ran at Orange County Fair Speedway regularly in the past, has announced his retirement following the 2009 season. Davis also ran part-time on the RoC Dirt Tour when it first started, and was always a top competitor. He finished runner up in Accord points a few season ago, and has compiled quite a few wins. We wish Barry Davis the best, and we'll miss seeing the #9D modified on the track!

Also, Club Wago won the 2009 DIRTiest Camper Award from Dirt Track Digest (even though we don't camp there). I have no idea if we win anything, but still, thanks to everyone who voted for us, and always thanks to DTD for having the contest!

Hearn and Clair Claim Big Wins; Fantasy League Problems

First of all, I apologize for not getting the Fantasy League standings up yet. I posted the standings after the Salute to the Troops 150, and tried a few times to post the standings after the Rite-Aid 200, but continue to get an error message. Jeff Sheeler is leading the league after event #12 of 15, he has 73 points, second place is Corinne Schaffer with 104, 3rd is John Baumes with 106, 4th in Jim Weaknecht with 111, and 5th is Kevin Moyer with 115.

Now, onto some racing results from the weekend. Eastern States Weekend was on tap at Orange County Fair Speedway. On Friday time trials took place with Tommy Meier setting fast time for the small blocks, and Tim Fuller claiming the pole for the big block 200 lapper. On Saturday, the 358 modifieds battled for 100 laps on the hard clay, and it was Brett Hearn picking up the $5,000 victory after holding off late charges from second and third place finishers Michael Storms and Rick Laubach. On Sunday, the 200 lap, $20,000 to win big block race was scheduled to be run, but rain has forced the race to be postponed until November 7th. Positions 1-36 are set for the 200, with spots 37-44 to be awarded through the consi, which will also be run November 7th.

The Fall Northeast Nationals features the season finale for the 358 Super Dirt Series was on hand at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Pat O'Brien set fast time for the event, but it was Mario Clair who passed Dale Planck late in the race to pick up the 100 lap win worth $4,000. Planck held on to finish second which was good enough to claim him the 358 Super Dirt Series championship.

Rain washed out Grandview Speedway's Thunder on the Hill Series finale, which means that Jeff Strunk has claimed the Thunder on the Hill modified championship.
