Rick Clay Returns with Rick Laubach
Rick Clay, who a few years ago owned a big block for MeMe DeSantis in special shows, will return to big block action in 2009 with Rick Laubach. Clay and Laubach will run specials together, starting this Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway.
Laubach will run his own #20 big block weekly at New Egypt Speedway and will also run his own car at the NJ/DE Tri-Track Series races. He'll run Fridays with Guy Germano's #542 small block weekly at Big Diamond.
Jim Young of RaceSong Productions broke the news.
NOTE: That was a typo I made about Laubach going to Bridgeport, my mistake, he'll be running New Egypt weekly, the post is corrected above.

Eric Kocher Paint Scheme, Updates, Racing this Weekend!
Here is Big Diamond regular Eric Kocher's 358 modified for the 2009 season, http://greenflag314.proboards28.com/index.cgi?board=photo&action=display&thread=1798
Also, note on the driver's links page I added Craig Hanson's link.
Still no word on two racing teams (that I know of), Wilson Motorsports still hasn't announced their drivers for 2009, although it's starting to look like unfortunately that the popular #16w won't make a full-time assault anywhere. Also, the Saracino Racing team has yet to announce a driver for their car, although there have been reports about possibly Donny Radd jumping into the #91 car, although that has yet to be confirmed
Hagerstown Speedway will open it's doors in 2009 on Saturday afternoon with an Octoberfest qualifier for the big block modifieds and super late models. Both races will pay $2,000 to win.

Mall Shows!
Arguably the best mall racecar show in the entire northeast is taking place this week at the Reading Fairgrounds Square Mall. With tons of racecars, driver interviews, autograph signings, and celebrity bartending taking place, Bob Miller does a fantastic job, as always, doing something for everyone of the fans. Pictures from the show are available on SouthJerseyDirtRacing.com.
The CVRA mall also took place this weekend, pictures are available on Dirt Track Digest, although no modifieds were there, a couple of sportsman teams unveild their paint schemes.

Club Wago Crown Jewel Fantasy League Now Open!
The Club Wago Crown Jewel Fantasy League is officially taking entries. Five people have already signed up, and we hope to have more participants than the 33 people that signed up last year. The league is free to enter. We'll be giving away a 2010 Season Pass to the track of the winner's choice, a free 6-month Area Auto Racing News subscription to the highest finisher that isn't a subscriber (if the winner already gets AARN, it gets passed down to second place, and so on), along with merchandise donated to us by teams throughout the year.
Special thanks to Zach Aubertine Motorsports for the season pass donation, and to Jeff Withey and everyone at Area Auto Racing News for the free subscription.
Also, thanks to Brett Thayer from http://www.cowpattynation.blogspot.com/ for making that cool fantasy league logo!

Troy Wink 2009 Paint Scheme
Well, Troy Wink won't be driving the #27 car that was posted on his website, or shown at the Atlantic City mall show early this year. Instead, he'll be driving a #44 which is a throwback to the early 90s. A picture of the car is available on his website here, http://www.winkmotorsports.com/team_44_results.htm#Team%2044%20Results

Big Diamond Added to Super Dirt Series Schedule
Big Diamond Raceway has announced that they will have their first Super Dirt Series race in a few years on April 26th. The race will be 75 laps and will pay $6,000 to win.
This now makes Big Diamond and Lernerville the only 2 tracks in Pennsylvania that are on the series schedule, there currently are no Dirt Series races scheduled in New Jersey or Delaware.

Matt Sheppard News...
Another paint scheme layout was found, this time a forum member of Dirt Track Digest pointed it out. Matt Sheppard's Tom Cullen owned #1x has the layout for it's 2009 scheme posted on Sheppard's website at http://www.matt-sheppard.com/news07.htm
That also answers some questions as to who would be behind the wheel of the Tom Cullen #1x in 2009. Willy Decker drove the car for most of the year last year, but the two sides parted ways late in 2008. Decker will run Utica Rome with his own #1x, no word on where Cullen will run with Sheppard.

Jimmy Horton in with Biever
Jimmy Horton will jump over to the Dick Biever Racing #14 big block modified for 2009, Chris Budihas confirmed on South Jersey Dirt Racing. No word on whether the team will run weekly, or just part-time. If the team will run weekly, that leaves another vacant ride with the Gino Postarivo #X big block modified.

Some stuff added...
Hey everyone, I added a bunch of driver links to the right side of this page. I tried to add every site that I could that's been updated at least since 2008, I know there are a few sites that aren't on the links page, like Ryan Phelps, Sam Martz, etc, but those guys hadn't updated their sites since 2007. If there are any I missed, shoot me an e-mail and let me know, Jman97531@aol.com
Also, a good friend of ours, Brett Thayer, started his own blog, you can view it at www.cowpattynation.blogspot.com he's got some neat stuff over there.
Below where the driver links page is added, and above where it lists the contributors to the site (it's just me and DiamondDog if you ever forget) I'll be adding media links as well.

Some More Paint Schemes...
Now that Volusia is over, we have a 2 week break until the modifieds return to the Hagerstown Speedway for the first time in 2009. So, to keep us busy, we've got some car shows going on throughout the northeast. Yesterday, Schaffer's Harley Davidson had a Race Day, which featured quite a few racecars, including the debuting of the 2009 paint schemes for modified drivers Shawn Fitzpatrick and Craig Whitmoyer. Billy Pauch Jr and Kyle Weiss also had their modifieds on display. Pictures of those cars are available on SouthJerseyDirtRacing.com.
Also, the S&N Racing Team, who will field a small block weekly for Jon Kellner at Grandview Speedway has a picture of their 2009 modified on their team website, which is available at http://www.sandnracing.com/
Tony Steiner, big block runner at Fulton and Brewerton Speedway, as well as select specials, has a preview of his 2009 ride on his website, which is available at http://www.tonysteiner.com/
Also, as reported on Dirt Track Digest, A.J. Romano and long-time car owner Bill Lake have parted ways. This has been confirmed on Romano's website. Romano will run part-time in 2009 instead of anywhere weekly in his own #16 big block modified.

Racing Family/Fraternity...INCREDIBLE!!!
Just sitting back this morning and reflecting on my Friday night out with my fiance and it got me thinking about the racing "family/fraternity" if you will.
After work Friday night, we decide to attend local racer Shawn Fitzpatrick's racing party he was having at a local establishment to kick off his 2009 racing season....We walk into the place, and man, IT'S PACKED, I mean this gig was really jumpin'....A good friend of mine I got to meet at BDR a few years back comes in a little bit later....A new friend I met over the internet is sitting there with his wife when we get there, he waves us over and finally I can put a face to the internet/message board name I've been seeing for years....There were a few of Shawn's on track competitiors there also this night, supporting another teams efforts....A noted angine builder and his wife were in attendance....Different folks who sponsor race cars were in the house for the party....Former racer turned car owner over the years is at the gathering supporting a fellow racer, whose own car won't be competting at the same track weekly this year....And last but not least, a seen MANY MANY DIEHARD RACING FANS coming out to support the local racer and his team....There just isn't any doubt that racing fans are some of the most supportive fans in any sport, honestly, THEY JUST ARE.
Just really got me thinking how the racing "family/fraternity" that so many of us are a part of, is just made up of INCREDIBLE, DEDICATED, CARING, and SUPER SUPPORTIVE people, it really is, and I'm so proud to be a part of it....I really have to thank my deceased aunt, she was the first one who took me to the race track when I was about 4 yrs old, after that first race I was HOOKED....It was just something inside of me that said, YEAH, THIS IS FOR ME, and it's been a part of my life ever since....And after Friday night and seeing all of the different people out supporting this get together, it really made me think how LUCKY I am and how a glad I am, that the local dirt track racing scene is a part of my life, and actually, how FORTUNATE I am to actually feel like your a part of something that makes me and so many othere feel like a big ole' family, because in many ways, if you think about, you really are, and I wouldn't change that feeling for the world.
Hearn Wins $5,000; Ward Takes Florida Title
Brett Hearn ended his Florida Speed Weeks with a $5,000 win in Saturday's big block finale. Hearn passed Andy Bachetti with less than 10 laps to go to pick up his first win of the year. Bachetti held on to finish second, Matt Sheppard, Billy Decker, and Pat Ward rounded out the top 5.
Pat Ward's fifth place finish was good enough to net him his second career Florida Dirt Tour title. The win gave him $1,000 of pocket money thanks to the Jeff Brownell race team.

Jamie Mills Wins Friday Night; Tidbits
Jamie Mills picked up his first win of the season as he won the 30 lap feature on Friday night. Pat Ward struggled, getting involved in two wrecks, causing him to lose his points lead to Dale Planck, who finished 3rd in the final results. Billy Decker started his first modified race of the year and finished second. The top 5 tonight was Jamie Mills, Billy Decker, Dale Planck, Matt Sheppard, and Andy Bachetti.
Colin Jackson scratched his #923 big block modified for the rest of the week. Alan Johnson barrell rolled the Scheider Brothers Racing #14J tonight, it doesn't look like they'll be able to repair the car for tomorrow.
Tomorrow night will be the Volusia finale, which will be a 50 lapper and will pay $5,000 to win.
Brian Weaver has finally found a ride in the Masagarus Racing #93. The team will run weekly at Utica Rome Speedway, and will also do some travelling on the RoC Dirt Tour and the NMX Series.

Pat Ward Collects First Checkered of 2009
The 2004 Florida Dirt Tour champion, and defending RoC Dirt Tour and Utica Rome Speedway champion Pat Ward picked up the first win of the 2009 modified season at Volusia Speedway Park Wednesday night. Ward and Matt Sheppard battled late in the race for the win, ultimately leading to the top 2 making contact and ending Sheppard's night. Rounding out the top 5 were Dale Planck, Andy Bachetti, Dan Vauter, and Brett Hearn.
Ray Swinehart blew a motor in practice on Tuesday and was a no-show for tonight's action. Jimmy Horton blew a motor tonight, no word if he has another motor with him or not. Billy Decker didn't run his modified tonight, don't expect him to run until Saturday night's $5,000 to win show. 33 big blocks signed into the pits tonight.

Ward and Sheppard Fastest in Volusia Practice...
After open practice Tuesday night at Volusia Speedway Park, Pat Ward and Matt Sheppard timed quickest after the mighty big block modifieds took to the track for the first time in 2009.
In the first session, Pat Ward set the fastest time of the session. Rounding out the top 5 in times were Matt Sheppard, Jimmy Horton, Dave Camara, and Brett Hearn. In the second session, Sheppard was able to grab quick time, rounding out the top 5 for session two were Ward, Horton, Hearn, and Jeff Brownell.
Three drivers not on the entry list took time, which brings the expected total of cars to 40. The drivers were Jimmy Johnson (driving for Gary Risch), Mario Clair, and Dan Vauter. Also, Sean Beardsley is entered in the John Behron #92 big block modified, and was expected to split driving duties with the rookie, however, he took time in his own #17 modified tonight.
The modifieds have their first race of the season on Wednesday night, Dirt Track Digest and South Jersey Dirt Racing will both have live updates, and Dirt Vision has audio of the racing action.

Fonda/Utica Rome Team Up in 2009
Two very popular New York Speedways will team up in 2009, and offer a 6-race series between the two tracks. Utica Rome Speedway, and Fonda Speedway, have teamed up and will run the NMX Series between the two tracks. Fonda Speedway will run 4 of the events, and Utica Rome will run 2 of the events. The series will be for the big block modifieds.
Last season, the NMX Series was just a Fonda mini series that saw Brett Hearn capture the innagural title.
Utica Rome has already announced their two races, which will be run on June 28th and August 30th, both races will be 50 laps and will pay $5,000 to win.

Here's our first preview picture of '09, with the new blog thing, I'm only going to be posting small and big block modifieds, because of the limited amount of space I have. Addison Meitzler will run this #21 small block modified weekly at Grandview Speedway and will run for the Rookie of the Year award.

Big Diamond Raceway '09 Preview
Well, February is here, and that means local dirt track racing is just around the corner....Since opening day at one of the Northeast's premier modified race tracks is just around 50 days away, I'd thought I'd give a preview of what can be expected at the Big Diamond Raceway for 2009....Just a little reminder here, the info I'm providing here has come straight from different media outlets over the off season, so it's on tape, or in print, as to what these drivers have announced concerning their plans and BDR.
Three words for you, ALL STAR FIELD....That is literally what you can expect to see to start the season off if you decide to come to BDR and check a show out or two (or hopefully many more than that)....Let's start out with a couple of TRUE legends of the sport who plan on being in the pits when the green flag drops on Friday night April 3th (first regular season sbm show)....Doug "The Diamond" Dominator" Hoffman will be returning to BDR this season....After running in one race last year, the Freedom 76 at Grandview Speedway in a BPG car, and finishing secnd in the race, Hoffman will be returning to weekly racing in '09 running for famed car owner Norm Hansell and his Norm's Save Station #357 team....Hoffman sure has had success at BDR over the years, as he's a 5 time former champion, but he'll also be tackling the high banks of Grandview Speedway on Saturday nights weekly this season, this will be a first for Hoffman, as he's NEVER run Grandview weeklyin his career....The other legend, Billy Pauch Sr....Last year's BDR championship car owner, Glenn Hyneman, parted ways with his championship driver Jeff Strunk at the end of the season...ENTER, Pauch Sr, as this combo was VERY SUCCESSFUL tandem many years ago, winning many races and track titles....An end of the year show at Georgetown Speedway had this new combo run their first race together since hooking up for the second time, and all they did was go out an win the race....Plans for '09 were reported early in the off season that this new combo would only run a "specials only" schedule for '09....But reports around the holidays started to come out that Hyneman and Pauch Sr would like to run some more shows together that just a specials only schedule would allow....Enter BDR, as reports have it that Hyneman has plenty of 358 equipment in his shop, and Pauch Sr didn't have a Friday night ride, so it looks like Hyneman and Pauch Sr will start of running BDR on Friday nights and take a "let's see how it goes" approach to see if they will stick around, for maybe, the rest of the season....Stay tuned to see how this plays out.
Now let's take a look a what some steady BDR racers over the years have planned for the place this coming season....Craig Von Dohren, CVD as he's known on the Pa scene, will be back aboard the Mike Harvey owned 1c for Friday night action....BDR's All Time leading sbm feature winner looks to be stronger than ever at the place, and he'll be seeking his first BDR championship EVER....CVD and Harvey only have to concentrate their equipment for BDR, as for Sat's a Grandview, CVD has teamed back up with his former car owner Chad Sinon, and this is a Grandview ONLY DEAL....Back to back champ Jeff Strunk will be headed to a new team for '09....He'll run for the Gagliardo racing team this season after two very successful seasons in the Keystone Racing #126....Look for Strunk to pick up right where he left off this season, as reports have Gagliardo providing the equipment that it will take for Strunky to get the job done....Doug Manmiller, "The Handler" as he's known in these parts, will have a new deal for '09 at BDR....Last year Manmiller ran as a teammate to Troy Wink, this year he'll be sitting in the Alpha Mills #14 that Rick Laubach drove for a few seasons at BDR, as Laubach and Dick Biever have split for 2009....I'd look for Manmiller to stronger than EVER this season at BDR, as it seems this team might come out with maybe a "chip on their shoulder" after the 2008 season went down the way it did....Duane Howard, Howard had a EXCELLENT year last year I'd say, at just about any track he pulled into....For '09, word has it that Howard will be back at BDR in the Chad Sinon owned BPG team to start the season off on Fridays and see how it goes....But in interviews with Howard in the off season, he's made the commnet about the competition at BDR this year, and he's kind of said it would be hard for him to see them not there weekly, another STAY TUNED I guess, lol....Billy Pauch Jr, he'll be back in the seat of the PPB #8 for BDR weekly, as Jr picked a first career sbm win for the Bob Greene owned team last year, and with reports Jr won't be missing any shows this year due to asphalt racing, I'd look for this team to make a run at the BDR title....Meme Desantis, although I haven't heard anything official on Desantis's plans, talk has Meme returning again behind the wheel of the Harvey Beitler #88....Plus look for Meme's son AJ to run at BDR also this year in the sbm's....Rick Laubach, "Scooby" is no longer the driver of the Biever #14, but Laubach has picked a ride for BDR action from NJ friend Guy Germano, jury is out on how this new deal for Laubach will play out....Keith Hoffman, 'K-Dog' is a former multiple BDR track champ, and he'll be making his weekly return in '09 driving for legendary Pa sbm car owner Dennis 'Moose' Eisenhart....Both of these men know what it takes to be the champ, as both have been there before, so I'd look for this combo to make some serious noise in 2009 at BDR....Sean Merkel, changes the off season will find Merkel in the seat of the Eastern Rigging #11 owned by Ed and Karen Nowotarski for Friday nights....This new combination have both been to BDR victory lane in the past, so a strong and winning year is definitely in reach this coming season....Ryan Watt, he'll be back in the seat of the #6, but this year it will be known as HP Motorsports....Last year Franny Purcell Sr, team owner passed away, this season his grandsons, Eric and Jason Hernley will be taking over the team, henco the HP Motorsports....Last year Watt started the year off with a BIG win the opening Friday night, I'd look for Watt to make it back to VL again this season....Ray Swinehart, 'Sugar Ray' as he's known at the Diamond, could be back in 2009, but nothing has been officially announced as of yet, but if he's back, he'll be FAST, as he always is at BDR.
A few guys will be joining the field as first timers this season when it all gets started....Richie Pratt, the NJ native and winning racer has been tabbed to drive the MAD Motorsports 11D this season at BDR....This will Pratt's first time running BDR as a regular, JMO, he's going to be one to watch as the season moves along....Danny Hieber, he's been around for many years, and he's been a winner...But Hieber took a hiatus from the sport for a few years, returning last year to race Grandview weekly....This year, Hieber is adding BDR to his weekly schedule for the first time ever....He'll run for drag racer Kenny Koretsky again this year in the Nitro Fish #107....Mike Gular, although Gular has run at BDR a few times over the years, he's never been a weekly regular at the place....That will change in '09, as Gular has a new deal with Terry Fasnacht to run two nights a wekek this year, another one to keep your eyes on....Earl Paules, he's been running BDR in the spts division the last two years, and will be moving up to the sbm's this season afterhaving an AWESOME year in the spts ranks last year....Joey Grammes, he's been a top runner at Penn Can Speedway in the past, but this year he'll be calling BDR home on Friday nights this year, running a car owned by his brother Brad and a Morrison motor provided by Earl Paules....Should be VERY interesting to see how these teammates fair out this year running in the sbm division at BDR.
Here's a few to keep your eye on as the season moves along at the BDR....Dan Hineline, tough luck last year with motor problems but he'll be back and better....Troy Wink, this guy really turned heads last year, and he'll be back even better this year, look for him to get that first win this year....Shawn Fitzpatrick, he has a new Teo car for the season, and he's been oh so close to getting that first win in the past, maybe it will happen this year....Mike Nicholas, the veteran picked up a win two years ago, last year he struggled until the last month or so, he'll be tough this year....Kevin Albert, he was a rookie last year, but word has it he has a Troyer car this year and he'll be fast again....Kyle Weiss, last year Weiss ran the spts division and did very well, this year he makes the move back up the sbm division, where he's won at BDR in the past on a few occasions....Colt Harris, this kid really got going good last year, a little more luck and he gets his first win in 2009....Dale Hartz, FINALLY, last year Hartz picked off his first career sbm win driving the Huber #178, he'll be back looking for win #2....Craig Whitmoyer, the former BDR spts KING moved up to the sbm's last year, and he almost picked off a win until Desantis got him with two to go, looking for a bigger and better year from this team....Jordan Umbenhauer, last year he destroyed his spts car, got in his dad's, Tom, sbm car for a few runs, and looked very good....Jordan will be making the full move up to the sbm division in 2009.
There are a few more names out there that are floating around as to who will be racing at BDR in 2009, a few of them are newcomers, and few are rookies, and a few are vets who are still looking for a deal or sponsorship....We are just going to ave to wait a little longer to some things are announced and finalized till we found out what the final BDR sbm roster is going to look like for the 2009 season....Once again, the BDR schedule has a little bit of everything on it, BB mods, SBM, Spts, RR's, USAC Sprints, WoO Late Models, ARDC midgets, URC Sprint cars, Enduro's....And there will be special shows along the way like the newly announced Memorial Weekend show that Sunday paying a nice $5G's to the winner of the non points sbm race....You have the traditional Georgie Stevenson Memorial on tap the Friday of the 4th of July week....The fan favorite Pepsi Challenge will take place in August....The Coal Cracker weekend Labor Day weekend....And the Diamond Nationals weekend to end the season at the end of September....Plus, you can look for more special nights to be announced as the season moves along.
Race fans, I'm tellin' ya's, if you have never been to BDR, you MUST make plans now to take in a show or two....Or of you have been to BDR over the years, for some, many times, YOU ARE IN FOR A TREMENDOUS SEASON in 2009, as this season IS SHAPING up to be the most competitive EVER at the place, I'm tellin' ya's, THIS IS MUST SEE, this season, your are not going to want to miss one single race, YEAH it's gonna be that darn good.

Hendrickson/Marine Part Ways
Wade Hendrickson and the Jake Marine Motorsports #85 modified team have officially parted ways on good terms, per Hendrickson's crew chief. Jake Marine will focus on action at the Delaware International Speedway helping drivers Chad Clark and Mike White (no word on Tim Millman). I don't know to what extend Marine will help Clark and White. Hendrickson in the mean time will run the Atlantic Wood Floors #2w big block modified weekly, probably at New Egypt Speedway (although that's not set in stone.) The team only has 1 engine, and is looking for help, and Wade is open to running anywhere for any team. Hendrickson and Marine had a lot of success together over the last few years, which was highlighted by an Octoberfest win in the big block portion of the event worth $10,000 at Hagerstown Speedway in 2007.
