Lots of Friday Tidbits

I-88 Speedway has canceled for tonight (Friday) already due to wet grounds.

Danny O'Brien will be invading Can Am Motorsports Park on Saturday night for the $1,500 to win season opener.

Jon Kellner Sr. and S&N Motorsports have parted ways. Kellner, a longtime Grandview veteran, will sit out the rest of the season unless another ride offer comes along. Steve Kratz, owner of the S&N team has been vocal about the rules that make a $27,000 motor that he purchased illegal. Look for the team to run Five Mile Point on a part-time basis, possibly, with a new driver.

Per Lenny Sammons in Area Auto Racing News, Billy Decker, Larry Wight, and Ryan Phelps, who all originally were not going to follow the Super Dirt Series, will all run the tour this season.

Look for Rick Laubach to now call Penn Can Speedway his new home track on Friday nights. He was another driver affected by the rule clarifications.

Doug Manmiller will drive for Shawn Fitzpatrick in his T102 modified at Big Diamond this week, and possibly for the rest of the season. Manmiller is the defending champion at Big Diamond, but missed the opening week. Also, per SJDR, Wade Hendrickson has found sponsorship that will allow him to run Big Diamond this weekend as well.

Dirt Track Digest reports that with Brewerton Speedway getting canceled already this weekend, Matt Sheppard and Stewart Friesen will invade Glen Ridge.

Five Mile Point Schedule Update

Five Mile Point Speedway, who's been rained out twice already this season, is scheduled to open their season this Saturday with a $2,000 to win show for the big block modifieds on Saturday night, which will kick off the points season. The Southern Tier Open, which was the show that the track attempted to get in the past 2 weeks, will now be run Sunday. The show will be highlighted by a 40 lap $2,500 to win feature for the big block modifieds.

Also, look for Mark Kratz to return to action in the next few weeks at Grandview Speedway.

Mother Nature Dominates Again; Strunk and Williamson Claim Big Wins

I hope everyone had a great Easter Weekend. Mother Nature was rough to the Saturday night tracks, as Sharon and Merrittville were the only tracks scheduled to race on Saturday that got their races in. The rest of the events were called off due to rain (master schedule lists what events were cancelled and what were postponed). On Friday night, Lernerville Speedway was the only track to fall victim to rain, as they've lost 4 shows thus far in 5 attempts in 2011. Here are the top 5 finishers from the tracks that did run this past weekend...

More Penn Can Invaders

Per SouthJerseyDirtRacing.com, Ryan Watt and (also per Moose4m) Tim McCreadie are the latest entries for the Can Opener at Penn Can this weekend. Moose also tells us that McCreadie will be at Fonda Speedway on Saturday.

Weekend Preview and Weekend Tidbits

First of all, let me apologize for not updating more this week. Been a crazy week with classes and other things in my personal life. I'll be done with finals in less than 2 weeks, so once that's all done I'll be able to focus more on this stuff.

Hopefully it'll be a busy holiday weekend in the modified racing world. Mother Nature decided she didn't want there to be much racing last weekend, and thus far this weekend isn't looking too promising either. However, 20 tracks will be looking to run this weekend. I-88 Speedway's opener, and Penn Can Speedway's $2,000 to win season opener, or "Can Opener" if you will, highlight the action on Friday night. On Saturday night, Five Mile Point Speedway will attempt to get in their Southern Tier Open, which will pay $2,500 to win winner of the 40 lap feature. Canandaigua Speedway will try to get their season started with a 64 lap Jan Corcoran Memorial. Mahoning Valley Speedway, Lebanon Valley Speedway, Fonda Speedway (points opener, not track opener), and Thunder Mountain Speedway all hope to kick off their seasons for the big block modifieds on Saturday night as well. On the small block side of things Saturday, Merrittville Speedway will host a $2,000 to win 60 lap season opener, while Can Am Motorsports Park will attempt to get their season underway as well. Here's the full schedule for this weekend...

April 22 Lernerville Speedway
April 22 Penn Can Speedway (Opener $2,000 to win)
April 22 Glen Ridge Motorsports Park
April 22 Accord Speedway
April 22 I-88 Speedway (Opener)
April 22 Brewerton Speedway
April 23 Delaware International Speedway
April 23 New Egypt Speedway
April 23 Sharon Speedway

April 23 Grandview Speedway

April 23 Canandaigua Speedway (Opener 64 laps)
April 23 Mahoning Valley Speedway (Opener)
April 23 Lebanon Valley Speedway (Opener)
April 23 Merrittville Speedway (Opener 60 laps $2,000 to win)
April 23 Can Am Motorsports Park (Opener)
April 23 Fonda Speedway (Opener)
April 23 Thunder Mountain Speedway (Opener)
April 23 Five Mile Point Speedway (Opener 40 laps $2,500 to win)

Duane Howard WILL be at Penn Can Speedway afterall this weekend, along with the invaders we mentioned earlier in the week. Matt DeLorenzo has posted on his website that he'll hit the I-88 Speedway season opener, as he looks to get some experience at the track before the Thunder Series races this summer. Billy Decker and Pat Ward will invade Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday night for the Southern Tier Open.

Weekend Tidbits

The two-time defending Freedom 76er winner at Grandview Speedway, Meme DeSantis, was injured at work and could be out of the car for about 5 weeks as he heals up.

Erik Nelson continues to improve after his hard crash at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park. We hope to see him back at home, and eventually in a race car real soon.

Dustin Delaney is returning to modifieds this season. Delaney will run weekly with his #39 modified at Fonda Speedway and Utica Rome Speedway this season.

Brad Brightbill has purchased the car he used at the end of the 2010 season and plans on running select small block shows towards the end of 2011.

Richie Pratt originally was planning on running weekly at Delaware International Speedway on Saturday nights in 2011, however, after just one week, Pratt has decided to change his weekly home to New Egypt Speedway on Saturday nights.

Danny Johnson will be calling Canandaigua Speedway home on Saturday nights in 2011. Johnson will run for Mike Payne weekly there.

According to PennCan.com Billy Pauch Jr, Wade Hendrickson, and Jeff Strunk will all be invading Penn Can Speedway's "Can Opener" this Friday. I previously mentioned that Duane Howard will be there, special thanks to Allen for correcting me, as Howard and the BPG Racing team currently are not planning on running the Penn Can opener Friday night.

Mother Nature Big Winner This Weekend; Weekend Recap

Mother Nature was the big winner this past weekend, as it forced all the modified races scheduled for Saturday to be either cancelled or postponed (check the master schedule to see what races were postponed and what were cancelled on Saturday), and also postponed Cayuga County Fair Speedway's opener on Sunday night. However, there was plenty of racing on Friday night, and Big Diamond was able to get their opener in on Sunday as well. Here are the top finishers from all the action from this past weekend

Curtis & New Egypt Tidbits

Former Sharon Speedway track champion Rob Curtis will be switching home tracks this season. Curtis will run small blocks weekly at Mercer Raceway Park aboard the Larry Rife Racing #88 small block modified. He'll still run his own #86 big block modified on the BRP Tour, and at Sharon when Mercer has off.

Danny Serrano is reporting on South Jersey Dirt Racing that with New Egypt Speedway now running tonight (Friday non-points race) as opposed to tomorrow night when the rain is expected to hit the east coast, Craig Von Dohren, Jeff Strunk, Richie Pratt, and Ryan Godown will be invading New Egypt this weekend.

Rick Laubach will invade Grandview Speedway this weekend as well on Saturday night, thanks to New Egypt running Friday.

Weekend Preview

Mother Nature doesn't appear interested in seeing a whole lot of racing this weekend, but hopefully the weather cooperates long enough to get plenty of racing in this weekend. I-88 Speedway and Utica Rome Speedway have already postponed their events that were schedule for this weekend, and New Egypt Speedway has decided that with the threat for Saturday night, they will run a non-points weekly show on Friday night.

Still, 19 races are scheduled for this weekend. Lernerville (this will be their third attempt), Accord, Brewerton, Canandaigua, Mahoning Valley, Lebanon Valley, Can Am, Five Mile Point, Thunder Mountain, Big Diamond, and Cayuga County are all scheduled to hold their first races of 2011 this weekend. Fonda Speedway, despite racing last weekend, will kick off their points season this weekend.

On top of the season openers, Canandaigua Speedway will hold the Jan Corcoran Memorial which will be 64 laps this weekend, Can Am will run 40 laps this weekend and will pay $2,000 to win, the Southern Tier Open kicks off the season at Five Mile Point Speedway with a 40 lap $2,500 to win show, and Big Diamond kicks off the season with a 35 lap-$3,000 to win show this weekend. Here's a schedule of what's scheduled for this weekend...

Alan Johnson and some Minor News

Per Doug's Dirt Diary, Alan Johnson will be in Deek Decker's #DEUCE modified this Friday at Brewerton Speedway. Decker's team has purchased a big block modified after running part-time with Johnson in select small block events over the last few seasons. Tentative plans, per a team source, claim that Decker and Johnson are looking to run weekly at Brewerton all season long.

This is really old news, but I realize I never posted it on here. Billy Decker, Ryan Phelps, and Larry Wight will run weekly Sunday nights at Cayuga County Fair Speedway.

Billy Pauch, Wade Hendrickson, and Mike Gular are still planning on invading Big Diamond's opener, which is now this Sunday after last week's event was postponed.

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Willix and Friesen Tidbits

Lance Willix will drive to Kevin Gamble this Saturday at Can Am Motorsports Park's season opener. Willix, a former Can Am 358 division champion, last drove for Gamble in the Salute to the Troops 150 at Super Dirt Week last October.

Stewart Friesen has officially announced that he'll make Brewerton Speedway his Friday night weekly home this season driving for Jeff Daley.

Johnson and Howard Collect Big Wins on Big Weekend of Racing

It was a big weekend in racing as 10 tracks were originally scheduled to race this weekend. Canandaigua, Big Diamond, and Lernerville all postponed, but 7 races still got in. Duane Howard and Ronnie Johnson picked up the biggest pay days this weekend with their $4,000 wins at Grandview and Fonda, respectively. Here are the weekend results and updated win list.

Minor Tidbits

Race Pro Weekly is reporting that Billy Decker will now run weekly Sunday nights at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. The track is World Racing Group sanctioned and it will give Decker Super Dirt Series home track points, but Gypsum Racing claims that they're just running there to support new owner Eric Kingsley.

Chad Brachmann hoped to start his season off at Selinsgrove, but the big block wasn't ready in time. He also hoped to make Lernerville Speedway's opener, but those plans have been scrapped as well. Brachmann will however be at the Canandaigua opener in a few weeks.

Danny Johnson will not run weekly at Orange County Fair Speedway this year with the Petruska Racing 66 team. Johnson will be at Fonda Speedway the on April 9th, which is the same night as Orange County's season opener. Johnson and Petruska, to the best of my knowledge, still plan on making at least a few starts on the hard clay this season.

Gary Tomkins will invade Orange County Fair Speedway for their season opener on April 9th. Tomkins will be driving the Ray Tuit Racing #673 big block modified.

Jeff Heotzler will be racing the Orange County Fair Speedway opener in Craig Mitchell's back up #93x. Mitchell and Heotzler have partnered up before, and Heotzler's last win at Orange County at the end of 2010 came in one of Mitchell's cars. Jeff Heotzler Jr will be in a back up Chris Shultz #24, as previously mentioned on here.

Jordan Watson to Replace Jamie Mills Temporarily

Bonnie Nibblett from RedBud69Racing.com is reporting that JoJo Watson will replace Jamie Mills aboard the Blue Hen Racing #30 big block modified for weekly action at Delaware International Speedway. JoJo, along with brother Jordan Watson, have been two top runners at Delaware in recent years after dominating the crate sportsman division at Bridgeport and Delaware. Both Watson boys were rumored to be dropping to the crate division at Bridgeport to challenge for their new headline crate division. No word on if Jordan will still run Bridgeport, or if he'll now continue on with running big blocks at Delaware.

Mills plans to be back in mid-to-late season. Mills was seriously injured in a scary crash at Delaware last August, and has yet to race since.

In other Delaware International Speedway news, Kyle Fuller and Shawn Ward will be moving up to the big block division this season from their crate sportsman division.

Howard Continues Grandview Domination

The 2010 Grandview Speedway champion, Duane Howard, started his title defense in grand fashion. Howard took the lead from Ryan Godown just past the half way point and never looked back from there, as he picked up the opening night feature win. Howard's BPG Racing teammate, Kevin Hirthler, led early until he spun and collected Glenn Strunk, who was running second at the time. Lernerville, Big Diamond and Black Rock were originally scheduled to run this weekend as well, but all those tracks scrapped plans after poor weather.

Grandview a Go; Schedule Updates; Laperle to Mods

Grandview Speedway is still scheduled to race tonight. They're the only modified race still on for this weekend.

Master Schedule has been updated with Cornwall's schedule added, just waiting for Granby, Drummond, and RPM to release their schedules, and for Eriez to announce their BRP Tour event.

Patrick Leperle, multiple time ACT Late Model champion, will be moving to small block modifieds in 2011. He's the fourth big name late model driver to move to big or small block modifieds this off-season (Jimmy Blewett, Rich Kuicken, Chuck Hossfeld, and now Patrick Leperle). Leperle will run weekly at Autodrome Drummond this season.
