Colsten Takes "Night of Features"

A schedule change gave us a third mid-week show this week, as Five Mile Point Speedway hosted the "Night of Features," which was a continuation of last Saturday night's races which were postponed due to rain.

Mike Colsten took advantage of a 5th-place starting spot and passed Brian Puckett near the half-way point of the 30-lap feature and cruised to his 3rd win of the season (all of which have come at Five Mile Point.) Here's how they finished...

Five Mile Point Speedway
1st 51 Mike Colsten
2nd 41 Brian Puckett
3rd 1J Jim Gabriel
4th 1 Stewart Friesen
5th 7c Chris Wood

There were 20 cars that were in attendance for the feature-only event.

Stan Frankenfield (scheduled to start 6th), Jerry Higbie (scheduled to start 12th), and Donnie Elliott (scheduled to start 20th) did not return Wednesday after qualifying on Saturday. Stewart Friesen, Joey Colsten, and Jeff Crambo tagged on at the tail of the field.

Howard Continues Grandview Hot Streak

Duane Howard picked up his 8th win at Grandview in 2013 as he defended his home turf against the invaders of the RoC Dirt Tour. Howard drew the pole for the 60-lap feature and led every lap, holding off a hard-charging Craig Von Dohren to pick up the $5,000 payday. Here's how the top 5 ended up...

Grandview Speedway (RoC Dirt Tour)
1st 4 Duane Howard
2nd 1c Craig Von Dohren
3rd 88D Meme DeSantis
4th 14 Doug Manmiller
5th 53 Mike Gular

A field of 38 modifieds were in attendance at Grandview.

Howard's win was his 5th career RoC Dirt Tour win, which ties him with Brett Hearn, Brian Weaver, Billy Decker, and Pat Ward for 4th on the all-time win list.

Keith Hoffman picked up a ride for the night aboard the Ryan Grim #17. Hoffman ran a solid race and ended up with a top-10 finish.

Billy Pauch was behind the wheel of the Brad Grammes #5J normally driven by Joey Grammes. An absolutely horrible call sent Pauch to the rear of the field after running in the top-3 in the early stages of the race.

John Willman was aboard the Banos Brothers Racing #3, which had been piloted by Ron Kline for most of the season at Grandview. He was able to put the car in the feature.

The leaders in RoC points had a night to forget. Points leader Bobby Varin was involved in a wreck and went pitside a few times. Stewart Friesen was able to cut into his points lead, but not after having issues on his own as he was forced pitside in the early stages as well. Matt Sheppard's car had to be pushed to the pits during pace laps, ending his night, and Rick Laubach dropped out very late in the race while running third (5th place points man Billy Decker was not in attendance.)

The RoC Dirt Tour's next stop is Utica Rome Speedway on August 21st, as the tour will have Twin 50 lap features on the card.

Tomorrow night (Wednesday) Five Mile Point Speedway will host the continuation of Saturday night's event which was postponed due to weather. The top-20 for the modifieds are set, and 4 more spots are available if anyone wants to attempt to qualify through the last chance race. Here's how the modified line-up currently looks...

Row 1: 29 Chris Ostrowski & 41 Brian Puckett
Row 2: 131 Barry White & 7c Chris Wood
Row 3: 51 Mike Colsten & 28F Stan Frankenfield
Row 4: J27 Brian Weaver & 20R Nick Rochinski
Row 5: 1J Jim Gabriel & 42B Kevin Bates
Row 6: 16x Danny Creeden & 55 Jerry Higbie
Row 7: 31 Brent Boyer & 14K Dan Morden
Row 8: 16R Richard Smith & 119 Brian Malcolm
Row 9: 117 Alex Stanton & 1a Brad Weaver
Row 10: 26 Glenn Knapp & 49 Donnie Elliott

Brachmann Takes Ohsweken

Chad Brachmann continued his fantastic 2013 season by absolutely dominating the feature event at Ohsweken Speedway, en route to win #7 of 2013.

Brachmann grabbed an early lead and never looked back, pulling away from the field and easily picking up the win at the beautiful Ontario oval. Here's the top 5...

Ohsweken Speedway (small blocks)
1st 3 Chad Brachmann
2nd 6 Mat Williamson
3rd 08 Mark D'Ilario
4th 17c Chris Steele
5th 25 Erick Rudolph

Twenty modifieds were in attendance.

Pete Cosco, owner of Chris Steele's #17c, made a return to the driver's seat in a second entry.

With Brachmann's win, he has now won at 6 different tracks this season (Ohsweken, Merrittville, Ransomville, Lernerville, Pittsburgh, and Wayne County. That ties him with Matt Sheppard (Canandaigua, Utica Rome, Granby, I-88, Cornwall, and Merrittville) for the most wins at different tracks thus far.

Tomorrow night, the RoC Dirt Tour is back in action as they invade Grandview Speedway for the annual "Traffic Jam 60."

All about Schedules

After another weekend plagued by rain, two tracks have made schedule changes in hopes of alleviating themselves from Mother Nature.

Five Mile Point Speedway was force to postpone most of their scheduled features from Saturday night after a rain storm ruined track conditions. In response, they have announced that they will complete the show this Wednesday, July 31st. A consolation has been added to fill the modified field, invaders will be able to tack onto the back of that event.

Utica Rome Speedway were forced to pull the plug early on Sunday. They've added a weekly show for the modifieds on Wednesday, August 14th.

This week's mid-week specials start tonight (Monday) north of the border at the beautiful Ohsweken Speedway. The small block modifieds will make their first appearance there in a few years and will pay $2,500 to the winner.

Tomorrow night (Tuesday) the RoC Dirt Tour invades Grandview Speedway for the annual "Traffic Jam 60." The race will pay $5,000 to the winner. Bobby Varin heads into the event with the RoC Dirt Tour points lead.

As previously mentioned, Wednesday night Five Mile Point Speedway will resume the show that was postponed from Saturday. Here's how the feature line-up currently sits (4 spots are available from the consi.)

Row 1: 29 Chris Ostrowski & 41 Brian Puckett
Row 2: 131 Barry White & 7c Chris Wood
Row 3: 51 Mike Colsten & 28F Stan Frankenfield
Row 4: J27 Brian Weaver & 20R Nick Rochinski

Row 8: 16R Richard Smith & 119 Brian Malcolm
Row 9: 117 Alex Stanton & 1a Brad Weaver

I'll have this past weekend's results and an updated win list posted later this evening.

Mahaney Defends Home Turf at I-88

Mike Mahaney took advantage of the second starting spot in Wednesday night's "Crazy Eights Special" at I-88 Speedway and after getting an early jump on pole-sitter Danny Johnson, led every lap en route to the $6,888 victory.

Mahaney may have led every lap, but the win didn't come easy. Mahaney had to hold off a late-race charge by Matt Sheppard to pick up the high-profile victory. The win was Mahaney's 4th of the season, and third at I-88. Here's how the top-5 rounded out...

I-88 Speedway (48 laps $6,888 to win)
1st 21 Mike Mahaney
2nd 9s Matt Sheppard
3rd 21 Shaun Walker
4th 66 Danny Johnson
5th 16x Danny Creeden

There were 44 modifieds in attendance at I-88 Speedway, as the trend solid mid-week car counts continued.

This was Brett Deyo's first promoted race at I-88 since the inaugural Short Track Supernationals event back in 2006.

Tim McCreadie ran into problems with the Vinnie Salerno machine after qualifying and picked up a ride aboard the Sherlock Motorsports #10 for the feature after Billy VanInwegen failed to qualify.

Mike Ricci entered the event in Rich Ricci's back-up car.

Deyo's next promotion will be the August 6th "Battle of the Bullring" at Accord Speedway.

Sheppard Takes Granby

On Monday night, Matt Sheppard ended up in 26th after he failed to finish the Super DIRTcar Series race at Autodrome Drummond. One night later, he was in victory lane at another Quebec track, Autodrome Granby. Sheppard charged from the 10th starting spot to take the lead from Brett Hearn at the 1/4 point of the race, from there, it was all Sheppard who went on to collect his 11th win on the season (and first Super DIRTcar Series win in 2013.)

Autodrome Granby (Super DIRTcar Series)
1st 9s Matt Sheppard
2nd 3 Justin Haers
3rd 74 Matt Billings
4th 20 Brett Hearn
5th 7z Dale Planck

Hearn's 4th place finish will keep him in front of the points standings as the Series heads to Merrittville Speedway on August 5th.

With Sheppard's win, he now sits tied for 8th with Doug Hoffman on the all-time Super DIRTcar Series win list.

There were 38 modifieds in the Granby pit area.

More mid-week modified racing action for you on Wednesday night, as the I-88 Speedway hosts the first "Crazy 8 Special," which will pay $6,888 to the winner of the night's 48 lap feature.

Planck Wins Wild One at Drummond

Dale Planck was in the right place at the right time as the Super DIRTcar Series invaded Autodrome Drummond on a full-moon night. Steve Bernard, Justin Haers, and Danny Johnson all ran into mechanical problems while leading, eventually giving Dale Planck right at the half-way point of the "Budweiser 100." From there, Planck had to hold off a hard-charging Billy Dunn to pick up his first Super DIRTcar Series win of the season. Here's how the top-5 shook out...

Autodrome Drummond (Super DIRTcar Series)
1st 7z Dale Planck
2nd 49 Billy Dunn
3rd 1H David Hebert
4th 39A Alan Therrien
5th 20 Brett Hearn

The win was the 5th on the season for Planck. The win was also his 7th career Super DIRTcar Series win (second at Drummond), which tie him with Billy Pauch and Jeff Heotzler for 17th on the all-time win list.

Matt Sheppard, who led the standings going into Drummond, dropped out of the race early and unofficially came home in 26th. Brett Hearn has taken over the points lead with his 5th-place finish.

A field of 39 modifieds filled the Drummond pit area. The Super DIRTcar Series is in action tomorrow night (Tuesday) at Autodrome Granby.

Laubach to Eastern Rigging Racing

Rick Laubach has taken over driving duties of the Eastern Rigging Racing #11, starting this weekend at Big Diamond Speedway. Laubach and the team will run part-time at Big Diamond (he will pilot the car when Georgetown Speedway is off), and may enter select other small block specials throughout the 2013 season. Laubach will continue to drive the Gary & Lori Herman Racing #7 modified in weekly action at Bridgeport. Laubach will also pilot the car on the remainder of the RoC Tour and the rest of Georgetown's races, while also entering other big-block specials.

The Eastern Rigging team's sportsman driver, Jordan Umbenhauer, will run as a teammate to Laubach in select end of the year small block shows.

Phelps King at Five Mile Point

Jimmy Phelps became the first repeat winner of the 2013 RoC Dirt Tour season with his win on Tuesday night at Five Mile Point Speedway.

Phelps was able to sneak passed Danny Johnson for the lead towards the half way point of the 60-lap feature, and was untouchable the rest of the way as he went on to pick up the $6,000 victory. Here's how the top-5 ended up...

Five Mile Point Speedway (RoC Dirt Tour $6,000 to win)
1st 98H Jimmy Phelps
2nd 19v Bobby Varin
3rd 51 Mike Colsten
4th 1 Stewart Friesen
5th 91 Billy Decker

Danny Johnson, making his first start aboard the Adam MacGeorge #86, crossed the line in 2nd after leading early, but was disqualified for being light on the scales.

Bobby Varin stretched his RoC Dirt Tour points lead with his second place finish as Matt Sheppard dropped out late in the event, and Friesen came home

The win was the third RoC win of Phelps's career.

There were guaranteed starting spots available for the top-15 cars. All I know is that Phelps took Fulton Speedway's Outlaw 200 starting spot, and Bobby Varin chose Five Mile Point's Short Track SuperNationals starting spot. When RoC and/or Five Mile Point release the rest of the choices, I'll post them here.

Doctor Replaces Varin with Petruska; Big Diamond Extends Season

It has been confirmed that Danny Johnson will take over driving duties of the Mike Petruska Racing #66, replacing Bobby Varin. This will be Johnson's third stint with the team, that has now gone through Danny Johnson, Jerry Higbie, Jeff Heotzler, Duane Howard, Billy Pauch, Billy Pauch Jr, and now Bobby Varin over the past few seasons. Varin parked the car in victory lane 3 times thus far this season, including 2 wins at his weekly home of Orange County and a win at the RoC race at Bridgeport. Varin sits just outside the top-5 in Super DIRTcar Series points, and leads the RoC Dirt Tour.

Varin will still have the Erik Nelson owned #85 for weekly competition at Glen Ridge, and will have the Tom Umbenhauer owned #19v and the Dover Brakes Racing #00 at his disposal for special races. Varin did participate last week at Orange County for Joey Decker.

Johnson will pilot the Petruska #66 part-time on the RoC Tour while competing weekly at Accord the rest of the season. Johnson will continue to drive for Tyler Siri on the Super DIRTcar Series and weekly at Canandaigua, and he also has his own #27J small-block for specials. Johnson started the season with Mike Payne Racing before the 2 sides split a few weeks ago. Johnson has also driven for Lee Shultz and Jeff Brown for weekly competition at Accord and Georgetown, respectively. Johnson will be in another new ride for Tuesday's RoC Dirt Tour race at Five Mile Point, as he will be aboard the car normally piloted by Adam MacGeorge.

Big Diamond Raceway has announced that due to the recent rain-outs, they will extend their season for another month. The 3/8th mile will run on Sunday evenings throughout the month of September, with the championship eventually being decided on September 29th.

Weekend Recap; Updated Win List; One Mid-Weeker

Another weekend in the books. After having 2 consecutive weeks filled with mid-week specials, this week we've only got one. The RoC Dirt Tour invades Five Mile Point Speedway for the annual "Night of Qualifiers" on Tuesday night. There are 14 starting positions for some of the most prestigious races throughout the northeast that will be up for grabs to the top-14 finishers. Bobby Varin will head into Five Mile Point with the RoC Dirt Tour points lead.

Here's a look at the weekend top-5 finishers...

Hearn and Trice Shine on Tuesday

Brett Hearn won a thriller at The Big Show, while Brad Trice won the biggest race of his career on Tuesday.

The Super DIRTcar Series invaded Albany-Saratoga Speedway for the 5th annual Big Show, promoted by Brett Hearn. Gary Tomkins passed Dale Planck for the early lead and looked to be on his way to victory before a mid-race charge by Brett Hearn eventually put him at the front of the pack. Hearn was then able to hold off a late race charge by Billy Dunn to pick up his the $9,711 victory. Here's the top-5...

Albany-Saratoga Speedway (Super DIRTcar Series $9,711 to win)
1st 20 Brett Hearn
2nd 49 Billy Dunn
3rd 673 Gary Tomkins
4th 91 Billy Decker
5th 7z Dale Planck

The trend of good car counts for tour races continued. There were 41 modifieds at Albany-Saratoga Speedway for the Big Show, which is the worst car count the Super DIRTcar Series has seen thus far.

Delaware International Speedway was also in action for the annual Camp Barnes benefit race. Trice took advantage of a restart early in the 25-lap feature event to pass Beau Wilkins. From there, it was all Trice who set sail on the field and picked up the biggest win of his career. Here were the leaders at the finish...

Delaware International Speedway ($3,000 to win)
1st 33 Brad Trice
2nd 30 Jamie Mills
3rd 85 H.J. Bunting
4th 16s Eric Kormann
5th 17 Scott Van Gorder

Utica Rome was schedule to have their fan appreciation night on Wednesday night, highlighted by a regular show for the big-blocks. Mother Nature had other plans, as a persistent rain cancelled the event.

Thursday the BRP Tour invades Expo Speedway. Chad Brachmann leads the points for the big-block tour through 2 events. Brian Weaver is the defending winner of the event, while Rick Richner won the last BRP Tour event, which was held at Eriez Speedway.

Last Week's Leaders; Updated Win List; This Week's Schedule

Sorry for the delay in getting this out there. We're going to post the entire previous week's top-5 finishers, including the mid-week shows. Even though I almost always do a little recap and post the top-5 the day after a mid-week show, we'll still throw it in with the recap. Updated win list and this week's schedule are also on this post.

Tidbit Tuesday; Ricci Brothers; Kenny Tremont; Utica Rescheduled

Good Moring. Sorry for the delay in results. I'll have the results/updated win list/this week's schedule posted tonight.

Remember, there are 2 big races tonight. The Super DIRTcar Series invades Albany Saratoga Speedway for The Big Show where the winner will take home at least $9,711. Also, the annual Camp Barnes Benefit race takes place at Delaware International Speedway. The big-block winnner will walk away with $3,500.

Now, onto some minor tidbits.

Mike Ricci has made a recent return to racing. Ricci, who parted ways mid-season with the Joe Grasso team and finished the 2012 season aboard the Tony Kawalchuk #20T, found himself on the sidelines throughout most of the 2013 season. However, Ricci has teamed up with Mike Wells in recent weeks and will run the car for the remainder of the season at Accord Speedway. Mike's brother, Rich Ricci, will also be making his first start of the season in the next few weeks aboard a brand new car.

Brett Deyo has announced that Kenny Tremont will run a second Jackie Brown entry in Accord Speedway's "Battle of the Bullring."

Utica Rome's rained out feature from Sunday night will be run on Ju 21st.

Brachmann Breaks Through; Mueller Keeps Momentum; Happy 4th of July!

After near miss after near miss, Chad Brachmann has finally broke through with his first career DIRTcar 358 Series victory. Brachmann's 5th win of the 2013 came in Wednesday night's "Battle of the Border" at Ransomville Speedway and was worth $5,000. Dale Planck led early, but Brachmann was able to take advantage of a restart to take the lead and never looked back. Here's the top 5...

Ransomville Speedway (358 DIRTcar Series)
1st 3 Chad Brachmann
2nd 7z Dale Planck
3rd 42 Pete Bicknell
4th 99J Jimmy Phelps
5th 1R Jeff McGinnis

Matt Sheppard, who had won the first 2 DIRTcar 358 Series races, but was recently penalized $4,000 and 100 points and was entered for Ransomville's race was a no-show.

Airborne Speedway scheduled a rare mid-week event as a result of a slew of rainouts. Jessey Mueller took advantage of an upfront starting spot and held off a hard-charging George Foley to pick up his 4th feature win of 2013 (and first career Airborne victory.) Here's how the top 5 ended up...

Airborne Speedway
1st 19 Jessey Mueller
2nd 34 George Foley
3rd 1H Pierre Berthiaume
4th 4 Leon Gonyo
5th 24 Patrick Dupree

Leon Gonyo took advantage of Todd Stone's rough night (DNF) to take a significant chunk out of Stone's points lead.

Bridgeport was rained out.

Vigneri Dominates Ransomville; Rain Cancels Grandview; Sheppard Penalized; Playing "Catch Up"

The holiday race-week continued on Tuesday night, as Ransomville and Grandview had races on their schedules. Ransomville was able to get their show in, while Grandview had to pull the plug early in the afternoon.

Ransomville Speedway saw Phil Vigneri take an early lead from pole-sitter Tommy Flannigan and never look back, as a dominating performance gave his him first victory of 2013. Here's how the top 5 ended up...

Ransomville Speedway
1st 44v Phil Vigneri
2nd 93 Rich Vinson
3rd 72 Tommy Flannigan
4th 38 Ryan Susice
5th 25 Erick Rudolph

Only 2 invaders took advantage of the extra track time, as 358 DIRTcar Series regular Daniel Nadeau, and Stewart Friesen (making his first start of the year in Jeff Daley's #44) both qualified for the night's feature event.

Tonight, the action continues as 3 tracks have mid-week events planned. Ransomville Speedway will host the 358 DIRTcar Series for the "Battle for the Border" 75-lap $5,000 to win feature event. Bridgeport Speedway will host hand #3 of the Poker Series with the "Tom Hager Memorial" which will pay $4,000 to the winner of the night's 43-lap feature. Finally, Airborne Speedway will host a weekly show to make up for their string of recent rainouts.

Speaking of the 358 DIRTcar Series, Matt Sheppard has won both 358 DIRTcar Series events raced thus far in 2013, but he will not head to Ransomville as the points leader. Following his win on Monday at Cornwall Motor Speedway, Sheppard' JB Motorsports 9s was found with illegal modifications to the 358 spec cylinder head, resulting in a $4,000 fine and a 100-point deduction.

Tony Steiner left the dirt-modified world following the 2012 season to take to the asphalt to join Oswego's super modified division. However, Steiner will be making his return to the big-block division this October to attempt to qualify for the SEF 200 at Super DIRT Week.

Here's a brief look at some "silly season" occurances that have happened during my "break" from the blog...

Steve Paine will return to weekly competition at Autodrome Granby piloting the Bruno Lepage #99 entry. Paine had success at the Quebec track in the 90s as a weekly competitor.

Following a strong start to the season, Duane Howard was released from the Eastern Rigging Racing #11 small block team. The team will finish out the year running a handful of modified races with their sportman driver, Jarrad Umbenhauer.

The biggest news was the split between Danny Johnson and Mike Payne Racing. Following a championship at the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia, the team struggled and the pairing went their seperate ways. Johnson has paired with Jeff Brown and Lee Shultz to split time between Georgetown and Accord on Fridays for the rest of the year, while he has partnered with Tyler Siri to finish out the year on the Super DIRTcar Series as well as weekly competition at Canandaigua.

Mike Payne has hired a pair of driver's to replace Johnson. Sportsman star David Marcucilli will run the car weekly at Canandaigua, while Dale Planck will take over driving duties for the rest of the season at Humberstone Speedway while following the rest of the Super DIRTcar Series.

Hello Again...

Ah, good to be back. Sorry about the blog being gone for a while--it was just sitting here as there have been a bunch of exciting things that have happened in my life. I figured it'd be better to just shut it down for a few months while I got settled into everything.

Now, the blog is going to be a little different then before. I'm going to try to do a better job with updates and what-not, and along with the normal tidbits and results posts, I'm going to do more opinion stuff as well on here. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Last night (Monday July 1st) the 358 DIRTcar Series invaded Cornwall Motor Speedway. Matt Sheppard made a late race pass on Jimmy Phelps and went on to collect his second 358 DIRTcar Series win in as many races in 2013. Here's the top 5...

Cornwall Motor Speedway (358 DIRTcar Series)
1st 9s Matt Sheppard
2nd 6 Mat Williamson
3rd 99J Jimmy Phelps
4th 14 Danny Johnson
5th 66x Carey Terrance

Danny Johnson was aboard the #14 small block normall piloted by Tom Benedict in the race. Johnson will have his own 358 for Wednesday's 358 DIRTcar Series race at Ransomville Speedway.

A busy week of modified racing continues tonight. The small block modifieds take center stage at Grandview and Ransomville Speedways. Grandview Speedway will have a $3,000 to win main event, while Ransomville Speedway will host a weekly show as a prelimary night to Wednesday's "Battle on the Border" 358 DIRTcar Series event.

Along with the $5,000 to win "Battle on the Border" 75-lap event at Ransomville, Bridgeport Speedway will host the "Tom Hager Memorial" which will feature a 43-lap $4,300 to win finale for the big-blocks. This will be the third hand of the Bridgeport "Poker Series." Airborne Speedway, after a rainout on Saturday night, will also have a weekly show headlined by the small block modifieds.
