Stewart Friesen, in the midst of the greatest season of his career, has landed another top quality ride for arguably the biggest small block race in modified racing. Friesen will be driving for Chad Sinon's BPG Racing team in next month's Freedom 76er at Grandview Speedway, which pays $20,000 to the winner. The news was announced at Grandview last night during the racing action.
Friesen has run in 2 previous Freedmo 76ers, including last year when he drove a second Norm Hansell 357 car, in which Friesen was involved in a accident and DNFed in the feature event. Friesen picked up his first career Grandview Speedway victory when the RoC Dirt Tour invaded back in July.
Sinon, who has won the 76er in the past with Craig Von Dohren and Jeff Strunk, will have Friesen team up with current driver (and current Grandview points leader) Duane Howard. Sinon has made it a tradition to put a driver in a second car for a one-off ride over the past few seasons. Brett Hearn picked up a one-off ride in the past at a Grandview season opener, in Coalcracker competition Keith Hoffman and Bobby Trapper are some of the drivers to pick up one-off rides recently for Sinon, and Doug Hoffman, Kenny Gilmore, and Shawn Reimert are a few of the drivers who recently picked up one-off rides in the Freedom 76er.
Unrelated, but 2 more drivers who raced big blocks at Super Dirt Week last year will also not be going to Syracse this year. Lebanon Valley driver Paul Gilardi and Airborne/Granby star Martin Roy will sit out this year's fall classic. Roy had a guarenteed starting spot for this year's 200, but will turn down the offer.
